Verbena bonariensis is my August to frost, tie together plant. Bought one plant years ago (zone 6b btw) and it reseeds every year. You can move around the seedlings in June once they are bigger to where you need color in August. They are tall, see through plants so even can go at the front of border. Be careful not to put too close to the lawn so they don't seed into it.

Everyone who sees them wants some!

marybethcia -- I've got to point out that this is not a native plant, and as such won't be as effective supporting the larger ecosystem. In fact, there's some concern about its ability to overtake native ecosystems, including wetlands.
