New Outdoor Shower Turns a Master Bathroom Into an Oasis
Gold fixtures, sleek tile and a connecting courtyard shower contribute to a refreshing bathroom remodel in Los Angeles
When designer David Veltman first saw his client’s master bathroom, located in a midcentury house in the Hollywood Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, the idea to add an outdoor shower immediately leaped into his mind. “It was the perfect setup for one,” Veltman says. “The sliding door from the bathroom to the courtyard was already there, and it even had water running to a hose that we could tap into.” The homeowners liked the idea and have since fallen in love with the result.
Before: The former bathroom included a shower-and-sunken-tub combination. The shower walls and tub surround were covered in small brown and gold tile.
After: Since their guest bathroom has a bathtub, the homeowners felt comfortable removing the sunken tub in favor of a walk-in shower, which provides a more streamlined look.
The new indoor shower features gray-green wall tiles and a custom niche for storing bathing products. Small square marble-look porcelain tiles cover the shower floor. To add a warm and glamorous touch, Veltman chose a matte gold finish for all of the bathroom fixtures.

A new vanity sits across from the indoor shower. It features walnut cabinets and a solid white quartz countertop, and has a midcentury vibe that matches the design of the house.
Wall-mounted faucets help to free up counter space, and a pair of gold-finished wall sconces flanking the round mirror provides a warm glow at face level.

Before: The former courtyard patio had white adobe walls and a crushed-gravel ground covering. A sliding door connected the space to the bathroom.

After: Veltman covered the gravel ground covering and the outdoor shower wall with composite-wood boards. “The outdoor shower receives a lot of sunlight and obviously lots of water,” the designer says. “So composite was the way to go, because it will require the least amount of maintenance.”
The larger wall is now covered in a large-format porcelain tile that mimics the look of concrete. Wall-mounted planters filled with a variety of succulents give the space a lush, oasis-like feel.

The master bathroom is a relatively small space, so by utilizing the connecting outdoor area, the room essentially feels twice as large. “The Southern California weather is ideal for an outdoor shower,” says Veltman, of Spazio LA. “It’s a feature you can pretty much use all year long.”
