New This Week: 3 Beautifully Warm, Wood-Filled Kitchens
See how wood cabinets and other elements make these rooms inviting
If you’re looking for a kitchen that’s warm and inviting, then wood is your friend. Use it for the cabinets — all or some — the floors, millwork, ceiling beams and more, and you’re guaranteed to create a kitchen that feels welcoming. Complementary colors like blues and greens and warm metals like bronze and copper can help balance the wood tones for a dynamic design. See how these three kitchens pull off an abundance of wood.
Other special features. Custom copper hood. Copper sink. Light green island base (Quietude by Sherwin-Williams). Subway tile backsplash with a 4-by-12-foot grid of blue-green tile laid in a herringbone pattern behind the range. Granite-quartz hybrid perimeter countertops.
Designer tip. “Vaulting the ceiling,” designer Ann B. Robinson says. “The area of the kitchen is quite large, so a typical 8-foot-high ceiling would have felt even lower over such an expanse.”

“Uh-oh” moment. “When the homeowner suggested vaulting the ceiling over the kitchen, we had to scramble to get the structural engineering done quickly so as to not delay the entire project,” Robinson says. “We also had a challenge of laying out the new beams on the ceiling to make them align with elements already existing in the kitchen.”

3. Douglas Fir Fantasy
Designers: Kyle McCollum of McCollum Studio Architects (architecture) and Emily Seiders of Studio Seiders (interior design)
Location: Austin, Texas
Size: 350 square feet (33 square meters); 14 by 25 feet
Homeowners’ request. Relocate the kitchen to the juncture of three living spaces (inside and out) with abundant light.
Wood features. Stained vertical-grain Douglas fir cabinets, table and island base.
Other special features. Wraparound countertop-to-ceiling windows. Connected dining table and island. The kitchen also connects to a deck and pool area.
Designer tip. “The value is in the glass and view versus the storage cabinets,” architect Kyle McCollum says. “Most of the storage is in a butler’s pantry and in the island.”
“Uh-oh” moment. “The biggest challenge was by far the steepness of the lot,” McCollum says. “Placing the pool on the main level for easy access was a critical component of the rest of the design.”
