Sure, your bed will be the main determining factor in creating a relaxing bedroom. But the overall decor plays a big role as well. Go too heavy on the decorating and your bedroom can feel overly busy and energizing — not an ideal combination for helping you chill out. The following three bedrooms embrace simple, relaxing design to be soothing, laid-back spaces.
1. Modern
Designer: Ashlee Berry of Design Shop Interiors
Location: Sacramento, California
Size: About 121 square feet (11.2 square meters); 11½ by 10½ feet (3.5 by 3.2 meters)
Homeowners’ request: A modern, minimalist bedroom that wouldn’t look like a typical bachelor pad.
Relaxing factors: Monochromatic color palette. Bed custom made by a local furniture maker. “Our goal was to make the room come to life, without adding a lot of unnecessary furniture or items but still have a warm and inviting feeling,” designer Ashlee Berry says. “To achieve this look, we kept the furniture lines clean and simple and the colors muted, but added layers of textures with bedding, plants and textiles.”
Designer secret: “Something we are constantly doing in our clients’ homes is the mix of high and low items,” Berry says. “Not everything has to be a high-ticket item. Splurge on some items and spend less on others.”
Bed: Marc Foster; garment-dyed diamond quilt and duvet: Restoration Hardware; washed Belgian linen pillow cover, 20 by 20 inches: Restoration Hardware; Madera lumbar pillow: The Citizenry; Tux marble-top nightstands: CB2; Envoy swing plug-in sconces: Schoolhouse Electric & Supply Co.; Alpaca corded stripe oversized bed throw: Restoration Hardware; Wave Form art by Kate Schermerhorn: Restoration Hardware; Case Study large cylinder with stand (used as planter): Modernica; woven earth handmade wool rug: Gilt

2. Southwestern
Designer: Mackenzie Collier
Location: Phoenix
Size: 156 square feet (14.4 square meters); 12 by 13 feet (3.6 by 3.9 meters)
Homeowners’ request: This is the bedroom of interior designer Mackenzie Collier. “My family loves the outdoors, and wanted a space that was light and breezy by day with a campfire vibe by night,” she says.
Relaxing factors: Remote-controlled gas fireplace beneath a full-moon photo. Fresh white paint. New oak flooring. Wool Army-style blanket. “I basically broke down the elements of what it is about camping that we love and translated that into the bedroom design, cautious to stop just shy of an obvious camp theme,” Collier says.
Other special features: DIY art made from sticks and stones the family gathered during hikes in Olympic National Park and Glacier National Park. Triangular wall mirrors subtly suggest mountain peaks. Southwestern-patterned pillow. Built-in dressers flanking the fireplace. The designer is also planning to place pendant lights over the nightstands soon. “I love how at night [the room] transforms into a moody sanctuary that helps us leave the workday behind while we unwind with a book or a movie,” Collier says.
Designer secret: “Paint is the quickest, simplest and most budget-friendly way to transform a space,” Collier says. “If it’s dark and dingy, paint it white and start fresh. Use mirrors to bounce light around shadowy corners.”
Bed: Craigslist; nightstands, faux-fur rug and pillows: HomeGoods; flannel bedding: West Elm; triangle mirrors: Urban Outfitters; stand-up mirror: Ikea; white DEW380 wall paint: Dunn-Edwards Paints; wide-plank engineered European oak flooring: Lumber Liquidators

3. Contemporary
Designer: Kerry Ellis
Location: Sacramento, California
Size: About 250 square feet (23.2 square meters)
Homeowners’ request: A new master suite addition to a home built in the 1930s. The homeowners wanted the interiors to be contemporary in style, while the architecture honors the age of the home.
Relaxing factors: Custom-made steel-and-walnut bed and nightstands. Hanging pendants that free up nightstand space. Vintage rug. Walnut flooring. Simple bedding. “Since we were designing a more contemporary environment, it was important that the room still felt warm and comfortable,” designer Kelly Ellis says. “We achieved this by using organic materials, and kept the lines clean.”
Designer secret: “The homeowners had the painting, which is the work of a local artist, and we wanted the piece to take center stage,” Ellis says. “So we designed the bed to frame the artwork”.
Dover White wall paint: Sherwin-Williams; bedding: Pottery Barn and West Elm; lighting: Lumens and Rejuvenation

These bedrooms are kind of "blah" to me. Even relaxing rooms should have some "wow" factor. These just seem "ho-hum".
Funny how people react differently... for me the first bedroom works slightly depressing and has a hotel room feel. I like the second bedroom , very relaxing, but where are the lights to read in bed ???
Love the calm relaxing feel of our new master bedroom
