Other special features. Tile floor that looks like wood. Quartz perimeter countertops. Custom maple island countertop and table. “It changed not only the complete look of the space but the function,” Jaworski says. “Now their whole family can sit and eat together at the same table.”
Designer secret. “The owners had replaced an existing island countertop with honed granite, but the shape of the island with a round four-person table wasn’t working,” Jaworski says. “By rebuilding the island, we improved the function of the space and they gained a six-person table plus bar seating.”
Pendant lights: Visual Comfort; bar stools: CB2; chairs: Four Hands; shelf brackets: Signature Hardware; cabinet hardware: Schoolhouse; wood island top and shelves: Arthur Millworks

Designer: Michelle Mentzer
Location: Milton, Georgia
Size: 210 square feet (20 square meters); 14 by 15 feet
Homeowners’ request. A light, bright and family-friendly space.
Cabinets. Custom, painted in Wind’s Breath by Benjamin Moore. They extend to the 10-foot ceiling.
Other special features. Six-inch-wide white oak flooring. Custom warm gray backsplash tile that extends to the ceiling. Brass pendants. Quartz perimeter countertop.
Designer secret. “Taking the cabinets all the way up to the ceiling along with the tile around the vent hood makes the space feels more grand,” designer Michelle Mentzer says. “If a client can’t have new cabinets made to fit up to the ceiling, my designer trick would be to make sure the cabinet color and wall color are the same.”
“Uh-oh” moment. “We debated on keeping the island countertop or replacing it with our perimeter selection,” Mentzer says. “We ended up keeping it and picking a perimeter selection that complemented it with a lighter tone with less movement.”
