If you are in love with roses like me and want to grow them in Maine or on the Maine coast I found this helpful article in Down East Mag. online: www.downeast.com/node/6674 The author, Glenn Jenks, designed and oversees the Rose Garden in Camden's Merryspring Nature Center. At the end of the article he lists the types of roses appropriate for the area and also where you can buy them.

Is there any plants that will help keep snakes away here in the north east?

Suzanne: LOTV is aggressive, not invasive. It is certainly no purple loosestrife.

And certain roses do wonderfully on the Maine coast. In fact, rugosa roses can become invasive in this environment--so be careful! The coastal maine botanical gardens have incredible roses. Your local nursery should be able to point you in the right direction.
