On Trend: Wood Tiles
Can anyone improve on nature? Check out these inventive treatments and innovative designs for wood tiles, and judge for yourself
If you had to guess the oldest material known to man, wood would likely come to mind. Think chimpanzees using twigs to suck up termites — this stuff has been put to use by those of us with opposable thumbs for ages.
As such, it's hard to think of a use for the material that feels unexpected. But place a most ordinary plank of wood on end and cut it against the grain, and all of a sudden you have something fresh and new. In tile form, this traditional material takes on an edge, especially when the species, finishes and even depth of pieces are mixed and varied. The results, as these designers show, are a decidedly eclectic take on familiar wood.

Wood for Good Modern Design
Interior designer Jamie Beckwith used textural wood tiles to create a focal point on this inset wall in her delectably over-the-top pool house.
Projection Polished Wood Tiles
You can get the same look from her own line of tiles, available through Beckwith Interiors.
Untitled - Magnetically Modular Art & Decor Tiles
Magnetic Grain takes the beauty of reclaimed wood and turns it into a fun puzzlelike art piece; you can mix and match limited editions of salvaged wood made of everything from colored pencils to vintage yardsticks. Magnets on the end of each piece hold the artwork together until the mood strikes to rearrange.
The re|Surface Table
Magnetic Grain founder and designer Trevor Elliot uses the same principles in his line of furnishings, which feature salvaged slats of wood that can be artfully arranged in tables (as shown), chairs and shelving.
Trail Mix Wood Tiles
Made of scraps left over from cabinet and door making, these wood tiles from Everitt & Schilling add depth and dimension to a space and are also easy on the environment.
E and S Tile
The company also uses reclaimed barnwood for several options in their wood tile line.
