My kitchen is probably a hybrid of the closed kitchen and open kitchen. It is basically an L shaped space that includes a dining nook with floor to ceiling windows on three sides. The cooking space and cabinets are at a 90 degree to the dining space with the sink out of view. There is also a two sided fireplace wall that separates the small family room from the kitchen/dining space. So I am able to enjoy four different spaces within these two connected rooms.
A family room, a keeping space next to the fireplace in the kitchen, a dining space with lots of light, and a work space for cooking.

Thank you thank you for your comments. This discussion is so relevant between my husband and me as we are designing a new home. Hybrid and keeping space yes yes.

Funny how things change. We bought our first house 34 years ago when combined living room/dining rooms were still around (closed off from the kitchen however). I remember how nice I thought the houses were that had 'Separate dining-rooms'...so beautiful, although we never did get one. I love the look and open-ness of the kitchen, dining, family rooms without walls...But they require organization. Unfortunately, when our company comes, I hope that they can't see my kitchen from the dining area! That's my issue of course, but if you are an organized person, go for it!
