Pantone Picks a Periwinkle Blue for Its 2022 Color of the Year
Very Peri is an enchanting purple-blue hybrid chosen to represent courage and creativity. See how to use it in your home
A lot of paint brands chose a shade of green for their 2022 Color of the Year selection, and many people speculated about whether Pantone Color Institute, the color standards management company, would join the pack. But Pantone went in a completely different direction for its 2022 Color of the Year, choosing a pretty purple-blue it thinks will take off in the coming months. Here’s more about the color Very Peri and suggestions on how you can use it in your own home.
Very Peri was selected for its blending of the faithfulness and constancy of classic blue with the energy and excitement of red. “As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of Pantone 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue coloor family,” Pantone Executive Director Leatrice Eiseman says. “Encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time possessing a violet-red undertone, Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expression.”
Kitchens
When it comes to home decor, Pantone sees Very Peri evoking a kind of new modernity and injecting a fresh, playful and creative spirit.
It’s an uncommon kitchen color, so it definitely brings a certain flair and freshness to a space. It works well as an accent color in an otherwise white kitchen. Consider using it on lower perimeter cabinets or an island base, which will give the space a nice infusion of fun color while retaining a light and airy feel.

Periwinkle blue is a rather cool color, so you’ll want to bring in some warmth with wood finishes or warm metallic accents, as was done in this Denver kitchen by Exquisite Kitchen Design.

Similarly, periwinkle hues can turn a bathroom into a comforting sanctuary. Just a dash of this alluring color can transform a bathroom from “meh” to “ahhh.”
This charming traditional Boston bathroom by Leslie Saul & Associates doesn’t necessarily need a color boost, but I like how the upper accent wall color brings the eye up, making the ceiling appear taller and the room larger.

In a tighter space, especially one that doesn’t receive much natural light, I think this color works best in small doses, such as an accent wall, like the one in this Milwaukee bathroom by RJ Builders, or via tile or decorative accessories.

Speaking of decorative accessories, if you love Very Peri, then 2022 will be a good year to pick up furniture and furnishings in the hip hue. That’s because manufacturers take note of Pantone’s selection and integrate the color in textiles and upholstery. And I think that’s the best thing about these Pantone Color of the Year picks: Fans of the chosen color will easily be able to find home decor items in it.

Exteriors
Periwinkle blue also works well on the outside of a home. The soft periwinkle siding color on this charming Victorian home by Merrick Design and Build is accented nicely by the darker purple-blue shutters. It’s colorful, but because a fairly tight palette of colors is used, it looks harmonious.

I think periwinkle as a siding color works best on Victorian or contemporary-style homes but that doesn’t mean you can’t use it for other architectural styles. If it’s not the right color for your home’s siding, think about using it as a trim color, such as for shutters or a porch ceiling, as was done on this Atlanta home by T.S. Adams Studio, Architects.
If you love this hue but are nervous about using it in large amounts, think about employing it in small ways that are relatively easy to change down the road. A wood exterior door tends to need repainting every few years, depending on climate and exposure, so why not have a little fun with the hue you use.
In a funny coincidence, I recently declared to my husband that we should repaint our front door to match the beautiful spring-blooming purple-blue flowers on a nearby jacaranda tree, a color reminiscent of Very Peri. I’m certainly on board with heralding in a spirit of courage, creativity and hope for 2022.
