Who: Talie Jane of Talie Jane Interiors
Where: Lake Tahoe, Nevada
In her own words: “I love interior design because it allows me to creatively solve spatial challenges for my clients. Every day is new and different and every project provides a new learning opportunity.”
There’s no doubt about it: The work-from-home boom is not only changing our spaces, but also giving us the freedom to decide where we want those spaces to be. Talie Jane, owner and principal designer of Talie Jane Interiors in Lake Tahoe, is seeing this cultural shift unfold in real time. Over the past year, she’s gone from designing second homes and vacation rentals into redesigning those former part-time pads into personalized, permanent residences that embrace the modern mountain lifestyle.

Home roads. Talie Jane understands the pull of the mountains. Her path to Lake Tahoe, and to interior design, was as circuitous as a mountain trail. The Chicago native started her career in advertising and worked in Boston and New York before leaving that behind for an entirely new life. “I’d always loved interior design,” she says. “I loved going with my mother to decorator’s show houses as a child and I was involved in the arts.”
After seven years in advertising, she decided to return to school to pursue her true passion. A chance encounter with her now-husband, a long time Lake Tahoe resident, inspired a complete change of lifestyle as well as career. “I’d never even heard of Lake Tahoe before I’d met him,” she says. Once she visited it, she loved it, and seven years ago Talie Jane embraced mountain life and hasn’t looked back.

Mountain boom town. Since then, she’s designed an array of projects, including ski-in/ ski-out vacation condos, gut kitchen remodels and bath renovations. Lately she’s noticed a boom in all-out home remodels. “Many Tahoe homes are dated, because they’ve been second homes or vacation rentals,” she says. “But now people are moving into them permanently and they need major work.”
Transforming a part-time space into a full-time residence goes far beyond brightening a neutral palette or upgrading surfaces; it often means completely reconfiguring a home’s interior to reflect its new purpose. “It’s a much more involved renovation when people are really ready to make a home their own.”

1. Enrich Your Kitchen
In vacation rentals, kitchens are often designed with mere utility in mind. For most full-time residents, this style won’t cut it. “The kitchen is a significant part of a primary residence,” Talie Jane says. “And it’s a larger investment.”
Inspired by the mountains and fresh air, this Bay Area resident, an avid cook, decided to make her condo on the slopes of Mount Pluto her permanent residence. However, the dark and dated kitchen was overshadowed by a drop ceiling separating it from the living area.
“She wanted a kitchen that was luxurious, with space for entertaining,” says Talie Jane, who removed the ceiling overhang, opening up the kitchen to the living room. She replaced carpeting with engineered wood floors, then added stained wood cabinets to match. A green painted peninsula echoes the sylvan setting. Quartz counters and a backsplash of small subway mosaic tiles add to the elegantly crafted design.

2. Reconsider Bedrooms
“Vacation rentals are all about getting heads in beds,” Talie Jane says. “To this end, bedrooms are often configured for multiple bunk beds with a separate television in every room.” Once a home becomes a primary residence, “bedrooms go from being used by four people to being used by one or two, with an emphasis on respite rather than entertainment.”
This Texas family relocated to Lake Tahoe for the outdoor lifestyle. With two teenagers, the owners wanted a comfortable, kid-friendly design that celebrated the setting. To create a serene primary bedroom, Talie Jane combined two smaller rooms into an expansive retreat space with en suite bath and walk-in closet. She added a double-sided gas fireplace enclosed with 3D stone surround. In the bathroom, a peninsula sink features a custom vanity and floating mirrors.

3. Play With Design
High traffic from multiple visitors means durable materials are often used in part-time residences, and often in a drab palette to appeal to a wider range of people. Adapting a design for full-time living unleashes the opportunity to play with surfaces, colors and textures.
In Incline Village, the owners of this condo wanted to play with shapes and textures throughout the bathroom design. After installing new quartz countertops, they added a distinctive oval mirror. “Our firm custom-created a Shaker-style vanity to offset the sleek tile work,” she says. They covered the floor in white hexagonal tiles, and in the shower, black penny tiles line the floor and wall niche. White subway tiles were used for the shower walls. “We added dark gray grout to emphasize the tile shape,” she says.
