Where: Redmond, Washington
In Gunderman’s own words: “I enjoy seeing the smile on my customers’ faces when they see their remodel and it blows them out of the water.”
When it’s time to remodel your home, contractor Raz Gunderman and his partner, designer Vered Mizrahi, urge you to think big. “Don’t be afraid to make changes and try something different,” Mizrahi says. A blend of talents. Gunderman got his start in bathroom remodeling when he moved to Chicago with his wife, where her family owned a bath remodeling business. “My wife and I worked with leaders in the business in Chicago, Michigan and Rhode Island to learn more about running this kind of business,” he says. The two opened a franchise of the family business in Seattle in 2000.
Mizrahi has always been interested in design, starting with studying fashion design in high school and then switching to graphic design. After several years working in that field, she switched to interior design. “I went from working in 2D to working in 3D,” she says.

Combining forces. The two, who met through Gunderman’s wife, had toyed with the idea of collaborating, as they realized they shared the same vision of a full-service company that would streamline the design and remodeling process. “We wanted to make it both understandable and pleasant,” Gunderman says. After collaborating on several projects, they teamed up to open Lux Design Builds in 2012.

1. Design for Your Life
Explore options for large or small changes that will make your home more functional for your everyday life. At this Redmond home, Gunderman and Mizrahi concentrated on changes that turned a haphazard layout into a beautiful and practical space. “We opened up the layout of the kitchen and family room to make it a better fit,” Gunderman says.
The home’s original layout was disorganized. “Everything was slightly off and poorly thought out,” Gunderman says. A sink that sat to one side is now centered under the windows. The island, which cut off access to the adjacent family room, was given a quarter turn to take in the view of the backyard. The team also replaced a smaller pantry with a wall of storage. They finished off the space with a 60-inch custom stove, quartz countertops paired with a marble backsplash with warm gray tones, new lighting and skylights, and warm hickory flooring. “It’s much more friendly for the people who live there,” Gunderman says.

2. Square Things Up
Rethink awkward spaces to get the home you need. This Mercer Island bathroom was large, but it had a lot of angled walls that stopped the natural flow and a door that took up too much room. “The owners wanted a relaxing spa feel,” Mizrahi says.
She and Gunderman built a false corner to square up the space and turned the hinged door into a pocket door. They replaced the original fixtures with a zero-clearance shower, a new tub, a double vanity, 4-inch-thick quartz countertops that ground the space and the makeup station that was on the wife’s wish list. The soft tones of the finishes combined with original art and the vibe of the greenery outside give the room an organic feel. “You feel like you’re in another dimension,” Mizrahi says.

3. Show Off Your Style
Highlight your own design style with finishes that speak to you. At this North Bend home, Gunderman and Mizrahi created an Art Deco-inspired redo of the primary bath. “The homeowner wanted it to be glamorous,” Mizrahi says.
Striped wallpaper sets the overall tone. A modern take on a classic soaking tub keeps the space looking fresh. The dark porcelain floor and quartzite countertop continue the classic-meets-modern feel, and accessories pull everything together. These include sconces flanking the mirrors, a shaggy stool and a crystal chandelier over the tub. The final touch is the original art featuring a woman practicing yoga, hung on the wall at one end of the tub. “It’s made entirely of gold leaf,” Mizrahi says.
