Who: Raelene Mathis of Mathis Custom Remodeling
Where: San Diego
In her own words: “Many clients want to expand or redesign their kitchen to create a more efficient use of the space.”
From the first cup of coffee in the morning to the last bite of dessert at night, meals and family life often revolve around the kitchen. That’s why it’s important that your kitchen meets your needs and makes your life easier.
“Kitchens used to be built with no way for those cooking to interact with their guests and family; people were very closed off,” says Raelene Mathis, who co-owns Mathis Custom Remodeling in San Diego with her husband, Phil Mathis. They update all types of homes to better suit their clients’ modern lifestyles.

An early start. Mathis has had a penchant for design since childhood. “I used to help my mom rearrange the living room; design has always been something that I enjoy,” she says. She and her husband entered the home improvement industry in 1983. “We started with a focus on bathroom remodels, then branched out to kitchen and full-scale remodeling,” she says. The couple thoroughly enjoys watching the home transformations unfold and playing an integral role in the results.
Professional perks. “It’s exciting to see a space go from old, drab and dreary to one that’s bright, useful and beautiful,” Mathis says. She loves selecting all the fixtures and finishes, such as tile, granite or just the right paint colors. She also enjoys the locations in which she works; some boast stunning ocean views.

1. Make a Wish List
Think about what is and isn’t working in your kitchen. “Ask yourself, ‘What are some of the features that I’ve always wanted, and what changes do I need?’” Mathis says.
The team determined that an addition was the best solution for changes requested by a client in Fletcher Hills. The client, an avid cook, wanted a pantry and a larger kitchen [seen here], as well as an indoor laundry room and walk-in closets in the bedrooms. “We added only 600 square feet to the back, but it enlarged the whole house,” Mathis says.

2. Reimagine Your Layout
Rearranging elements within a room can really transform it. The La Jolla condo seen here, for instance, didn’t originally have an entryway; the Mathis team reimagined the space and rearranged elements to create one.
“We added a full-height cabinet to the kitchen peninsula to provide a place for the clients’ artwork, creating a more defined entryway,” Mathis says. They also bumped out the peninsula to add more countertop space, and moved the refrigerator away from the stairwell and closer to the sink.

3. Improve Your Storage
Maximize the space you have by installing more efficient storage. Using drawers instead of cabinets and adding pullout pantries and cabinet accessories can make a world of difference, Mathis says.
The team installed custom cabinetry next to the washer-dryer unit in this bright North Park kitchen. It features specialty shelving, a pullout pantry and a utility closet. “It makes the most of every available inch of space,” Mathis says.
