Who: Becky Rose Grinwald of Becky Rose Design
Where: Nashville, Tennessee
In her own words: “It is incredibly rewarding to come back after a project is completed and see my clients thriving, with genuine joy and comfort, in the spaces that I created for them.”
A beloved chair passed down from a grandparent. Your favorite shade of sparkling sapphire blue. Stacks of novels that beckon next to a comfy armchair. Your preferences, your memories and the items you’ve collected over the years should be the cornerstone of your interior design. “Your home should feel like an approachable reflection of you,” says Becky Rose Grinwald, owner of Becky Rose Design in Nashville. “Rooms should flow and draw your eye around so all of the elements come together.”

Family roots. Grinwald grew up in rural Wisconsin as part of a crafty, handy family. “We were always watching home improvement shows, which I think started my affection for historical design elements,” she says. Her personal dedication to artistic pursuits continued throughout her schooling and now infuses her professional work. “Art, music, baking, traveling — I translate all those creative outlets into projects with feelings, textures, details and techniques,” she says.
Filling a blank slate. Grinwald enjoys the opportunity to start with a clean canvas. “When I’m involved from the blueprint stage, I can help with every last detail,” she says. “Layout of furniture, proper lighting, finishes, flooring, wallcoverings, window treatments — all of it.” Clients’ personal items also come into play. “I love taking my clients’ artifacts and heirlooms and incorporating them into the space,” she says.

1. Create Your Desired Emotion
Materials, textures, hues and patterns can all help create an overall feeling in your home. “Whether it’s joy, peace or invigoration, your space should evoke those things,” Grinwald says.
The owners of the home seen here wanted a sense of serenity to flow through their spaces. Grinwald used texture and pattern to create an approachable haven in their master bedroom. The embroidered window shade is finished with beads that reflect the pearly-white lampshade. The soft shades of taupe, linen and gray, the quiet geometrics of the chair’s upholstery and the fluffy blanket help to create an inviting space.

2. Choose Your Favorite Colors
Maybe you like pale neutrals, or perhaps you adore deep jewel tones. Whatever the hues, “find what you prefer and be open to ways of approaching them differently than you might have thought,” Grinwald says.
In the house whose library is seen here, white was the predominant wall color. Grinwald created a new palette of blues and greens to suit one of the homeowners’ tastes, using a deeper blue for the new library, which she created out of a closet and powder room. The rug and bookshelf decor provide joyful dashes of bright colors.

3. Mix In Treasured Elements
Find personal touches that evoke memories and meaning for you. “And also incorporate unexpected pleasing moments of surprise,” Grinwald says.
In the home whose living room is seen here, Grinwald hung over the sofa three paintings that one of the homeowners had brought from Israel, where she was born. In a further nod to the woman’s heritage, Grinwald commissioned the large-scale painting over the fireplace from another Israeli artist for a fresh, vibrant splash of color. The piano is a family heirloom that holds pride of place in a dedicated corner.
