Barbara Stock, we just had beautiful quartzite installed on our counter tops and backsplash. I think that all along I had assumed it was quartz, so I never did any research. After a few weeks we noticed that grease left marks, and sitting water darkened the surface too. We were horrified, never realizing how porous it would be...but we are stuck with it! Do you recommend a sealer that actually seals and protects the surface?

Soni, it sounds like your quartzite was not sealed at all. Any fabricator worth anything would seal the quartzite thoroughly before installing it. If done properly, you should only have to seal it once every couple of years or if it is a light color and if it is dark, you can go even longer. I have had only dark granite which was sealed before installation and have never sealed it. One of our houses has granite going on 25 years and still looks brand new. The other house, we had granite installed in 2015. I have never sealed it and it looks the same as it did when installed. In any event, sealing is not a big deal. Just spray it on and wipe it down. No harder than when you clean your counters. I have heard that StoneTech and Granite Gold both make good sealers.

My regular installer always uses Dupont or Stonetech "Bulletproof" sealer. Never had a call back or problems.
