San Francisco Decorator Showcase Goes Virtual
Peek inside the 2020 show house, which offers inspiration with a video tour, a 3D tour and interviews with designers
The 43rd annual San Francisco Decorator Showcase debuted online Saturday, Sept. 5. For this year’s show house, which can be viewed virtually, more than 20 interior and landscape designers transformed 27 distinct spaces in a 1926 Mediterranean-style house near Sea Cliff and the Presidio.
Due to public health concerns around COVID-19, no in-person tours are allowed, but there are still plenty of ways to get inspiration and ideas from the show house. A comprehensive walk-through video tour, a 3D self-guided tour and links to interviews with designers will provide an in-depth look at the house and gardens from the comfort of your home.
The annual fundraising design event, which benefits San Francisco University High School, features decorated rooms that aren’t intended to create a unified interior but instead to independently showcase each designer’s style. Take a peek at some of our favorite spaces this year.

Double-Duty Dining Room
Designer: Kelly Hohla Interiors
Designer Kelly Hohla created the dining room to be a space that’s ideal for the times. “Over the last several years, our clients have been asking us to create rooms that function in more than one way,” Hohla says. “With the current pandemic, multifunctional rooms are becoming the norm.”
Addressing that, Hohla designed a multifaceted dining room that also serves as a library, workspace and spot for having cocktails. The star of the room is a bespoke sculptural dining table that can seat a dinner party or be separated to create an informal workspace. The ceiling, clad in hand-painted Japanese wallpaper, is another standout.

Whimsical Living Room
Designer: Applegate Tran Interiors
The living room, by designers Vernon Applegate and Gioi Tran, combines a relaxed California vibe with cosmopolitan flair. It features oversize furniture arranged on an irregular axis to create a whimsical feel.
“We paired lines, circles, rectangles and cylinders with free-form shapes found in nature,” Applegate says. Splashes of bright colors via the art and accessories offset the neutral furniture palette and white plaster walls.

Marble-and-Mint-Green Kitchen
Designer: Regan Baker Design
For the kitchen, designer Regan Baker took cues from the existing architecture of the home to blend traditional character and modern design elements. Marble countertops, chevron-pattern oak floors and natural brass faucets have classic character. Mint-green cabinets with low-profile hardware add a soothing contemporary vibe.
“Many of the furnishings and built-in cabinetry recall freestanding classic pieces,” Baker says. “We used a color palette that feels earthy, unsaturated and timeless.”

Bold Blue Bathroom
Designer: Barbra Bright Design
The vibrant blues in the guest bathroom, by designer Barbra Bright, were inspired by the home’s Mediterranean style. “I immediately thought blue tiles to represent the Mediterranean Sea,” Bright says. “The Moroccan mirror and lights just fell into place after that.”
Behind the sink is a wall of deep blue tiles, textured to give the impression that they undulate like waves in the Mediterranean Sea. The vivid blue is juxtaposed with a black-and-white marble tile on both the floor and bathtub wall. The gold hardware and fixtures add a luxe look.
