Kitchen appliances account for a large chunk of a remodeling budget. Many design professionals recommend setting aside about 12% of your overall remodeling budget to spend on appliances. And with half of homeowners choosing to replace all of their appliances during a kitchen update, according to the latest Houzz research, that’s a big expense that warrants careful consideration.
To help make the right investment, consider these latest kitchen appliance trends and features that debuted at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show in February.

Induction. Probably the hottest (pun intended) cooking feature right now is induction. This method uses electricity to heat pots and pans directly through magnetic induction. Induction cooktops work with many types of pots and pans — such as stainless steel, cast iron and porcelain enamel on metal — but they don’t work on all, so you might have to replace some of your cookware. If a magnet sticks firmly on the bottom of a pot or pan, the piece will work with induction.
The benefit is that those pots and pans heat much quicker and cook more evenly than with gas or electric cooktops.
Induction has been gaining in popularity in recent years, and it appears manufacturers have caught up. Several brands recently launched or announced new induction cooktops and ranges.
Samsung debuted a full line of induction cooktops and ranges. The ranges have four induction burners atop a 6.3-cubic-foot oven with steam and air fry options.
The company is also building on its induction cooktops launched in 2021 with a new 30-inch cooktop line that offers easy-to-install options for homeowners looking to make the switch to induction. All of its induction products are Wi-Fi-enabled, allowing users to control the appliance from Samsung’s SmartThings app. The new line of ranges and cooktops will be available this spring in stainless steel and black stainless steel.
Smeg debuted an induction cooktop addition to its Pro-Style range collection, shown here.

Dual-fuel. “Dual-fuel” was another term used heavily at the Kitchen & Bath Industry Show. This arrangement offers the combination of a gas-fueled cooktop with an electric oven.
BlueStar launched a new line of dual-fuel ranges, including the 36-inch model in matte black shown here.

2. Wall Ovens
Double ovens. If you prefer the flexibility of having a separate cooktop and oven, you’re in luck. There are tons of new wall oven options with cool features.
Several new double-oven arrangements debuted at the show. Frigidaire’s new Gallery line features a double oven, shown here, with more than 15 cooking modes, including air fry and steam. You can even start baking without preheating.
It also features touchscreen displays, tinted glass, extra-large oven capacities (5.3 cubic feet each) and special hinges that eliminate the need for built-in trim pieces. The single- and double-oven models are available now in smudge-proof stainless steel and black stainless steel finishes.

Single wall ovens. For those who don’t need double ovens, there are plenty of single-oven units out there. There are also built-in models for a variety of dedicated cooking options.
For example, Fisher & Paykel’s new 24-inch combination steam oven, launching April 1, offers options for steam, convection or a combination of the two methods. A water line isn’t needed; instead, the oven uses a 50-ounce water tank behind the touchscreen panel, which drops down.
The manufacturer says cooking with steam helps food retain moisture and up to 50% more nutrients in fish, poultry, starches and vegetables and eliminates the need for butter or oils during cooking.

Miele debuted the largest product launch in its history. Generation 7000 includes various built-in wall appliances that can be paired for a seamless look. There are convection ovens, combination steam ovens, coffee machines and vacuum-sealing drawers. The oven model comes with a camera inside so you can monitor food from an app.
3. Refrigerators
Helpful features. Small, thoughtful details can make a big difference in the experience of using a product. And refrigerator manufacturers continue to innovate beyond simply keeping food cold.
LG’s new InstaView side-by-side refrigerators feature a glass viewing window so you can quickly see the fridge’s contents without opening the door. The water dispenser features UV sanitization.
And LG’s Signature Kitchen Suite brand announced a new ThinQ Care artificial intelligence technology that monitors refrigerator usage and performance and contacts the homeowner if a service issue is detected.

Drawer freshness. At least two companies announced new technology that promotes fresh food in refrigerator drawers.
Frigidaire’s new Gallery line features a crisper drawer with a built-in antioxidant filter that reduces ethylene gas and odors and preserves food color.
Beko announced its HarvestFresh drawer, shown here, which has a three-light cycle that simulates the three primary sun patterns of the day to preserve vitamins A and C in fresh produce.

4. Dishwashers
Fast cycles. If you haven’t bought a new dishwasher in many years, there are a few noteworthy innovations that might make you wonder why you haven’t upgraded sooner.
Busy homeowners might find the new fast wash cycles the most compelling. LG’s new QuadWash Pro cleans and dries in just one hour.

Innovative features. In addition to shorter wash cycles, manufacturers are also innovating with cleaning features.
Miele’s ProfiLine features a final rinse temperature of up to 180 degrees Fahrenheit to sanitize dishes. LG’s QuadWash has a superheated steam function at the end of the cycle.
And Beko’s CornerIntense dishwasher technology, shown here, features a moving arm that pushes the rotating blades into the corners of the dishwasher to clean items that might be missed with a standard stationary circular spin.

Dishwasher drawers. Many homeowners and designers have found that a drawer setup functions better for items that sit below a countertop. Drawer storage for lower cabinetry has taken off in recent years, and the idea is finding a home in appliances as well.
A couple of manufacturers recently announced new dishwashing drawers. GE’s Cafe dishwasher drawer, available this spring, features two drawers in the same space as a traditional dishwasher. This gives homeowners the flexibility to use both drawers independently and to program different settings and temperatures for each. The drawers will be available in spring in stainless steel, matte white and matte black, as well as in four customized handle finishes.

5. Microwaves
Over-the-range models. There’s been a lot of discussion in recent years about where to put a microwave. Under the counter? Hidden away in a cabinet or pantry? But over a range is one of the most common spots and often the only option for some homeowners.
Some manufacturers have taken note, launching new designs for over-the-range models. LG’s new over-the-range microwave, shown here, has a 2.1-cubic-foot capacity with a steam cook feature. A slide-out vent reduces smoke and cooking smells, extending its reach to cover the front burners, not just the rear, which is a common complaint with over-the-range microwaves.
The unit also comes connected to LG’s ThinQ Recipe, a smartphone app that allows a user to find recipes and order the ingredients all at once from Walmart or Amazon Fresh.
There’s also an option to scan a UPC barcode on many ready-made meals to remotely set the temperature and cooking time.

6. Colors and Finishes
Bold looks. While there’s no doubt that stainless steel remains the most popular appliance finish, many manufacturers are expanding their offerings to include bolder finishes.
Samsung announced a collaboration with artist Alex Proba for its Bespoke 4-Door Flex refrigerator featuring a colorful abstract jungle print design. The limited-edition model is available now for preorder.

7. Other Appliance Tech
UV sanitization. One result of the pandemic is an increased interest in technologies that sanitize parts of our home. As mentioned earlier, dishwashers are offering superheated options to sanitize dishes. LG’s new refrigerator has a water dispenser with UV sanitization. And then there’s Moen’s new UV sanitizer for garbage disposals.
Insert the UV sanitizer, shown here charging on the countertop, into the garbage disposal chamber and the device will sterilize the interior, killing bacteria in discarded foods such as raw meat, eggs and fish.

Multiple cooking features. The numerous ways to cook food with intense heat is mind-boggling. But when you drill down into each method, it’s clear that all have their benefits. Owning a separate air fryer or griddle or device for assisting in sous vide can be cumbersome, so manufacturers are now combining various functions into single units.
LG’s new InstaView double-oven slide-in gas range has multiple cooking functions for things like air frying, sous vide and convection baking. The InstaView technology lets homeowners see inside the oven by knocking twice on the glass door, which illuminates the interior.
