See the Winning 3D Design Inspired by the Hit Film SUPERMAN
Fans voted for this waterfall-wrapped Fortress, winning its designer a trip to Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood
Designer Trevor J. Peterson appreciates the quiet moments, so when a recent Houzz contest called on pros to use the Houzz Pro 3D Floor Planner to create a space inspired by Superman™’s own Fortress of Solitude, he leaped at the chance.
Well, he didn’t jump into action immediately. “I spent several days mentally strategizing a concept and design for my project before actually beginning any renderings,” Peterson says. “In fact, I did not even start this rendering until 12 hours before its deadline for submissions. But having taken the time to really think about what I wanted to accomplish with this design allowed my vision to just flow right from my brain straight onto the computer.”
The thoughtful approach paid off. Peterson’s design captured the most votes among the top three finalists, winning him two tickets to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood in Burbank, California, plus a travel stipend — a prize package valued at $3,100.
Here, Peterson shares photorealistic images of his winning design created using Houzz Pro and answers questions about his take on the Man of Steel’s iconic hideaway. SUPERMAN, a Warner Bros. Pictures release, is now playing only in theaters worldwide.

3. How was your experience designing a space using Houzz Pro’s 3D Floor Planner tool?
“I have been using the Houzz Pro 3D Floor Planner tool for close to six months now and my experience has been truly phenomenal,” Peterson says. “My favorite function to utilize is the Clipper Tool, which allows me to incorporate any item or product from any store online into my 3D renderings. This has been a tremendous game changer for my client presentations, as I am easily able to both illustrate and articulate my vision for my designs with extreme precision and detailed accuracy.”

4. Just for fun — some have said that Superman’s super dog Krypto steals the movie. Are there any specific elements that you would add to your design to make him happy?
“Being a dog lover myself, I would never dare disappoint my actual favorite clients,” Peterson says. “I always take my clients’ pets into consideration when constructing my designs because they are family too and deserve their special little accommodations just as we do. Although I have yet to work with a super dog, I get the sense that there would be some similarities that compare to some of my furry clients’ needs, such as getting their own pantries, doggy spas and sometimes even bedrooms. However, for Krypto, I would absolutely have to design him his own specialty hangar-style dog hangout. There would be a floating racetrack on the ceiling for flight and agility, laser-proof walls that would hold up during training sessions and a salon with a personal stylist to ensure his flawless demeanor is maintained.”

5. Can you share a description about your company?
“I have just recently begun my venture as an independent artist, having just opened my own design label in May of this year,” Peterson says. “The Coterie | Atelier provides elite, custom design services within the Tulsa metro area in Oklahoma.… My company flourishes on pure creative authenticity, delivering boujee designs and timeless aesthetics into every project I have the privilege to be a part of. Each home that I design for my clients — new construction or remodel — is a one-of-a-kind product that cannot be found anywhere else, and is tailored to their wants and needs.”

“When you think of Superman’s home, you immediately think of the frozen tundra landscape with crystal-like stalactites which create his fortress,” Peterson says. “I wanted to take a different approach in terms of elemental surroundings. I would describe my design as an organic modern mountain godly estate, which features tons of natural stones, woods and, of course, water everywhere. No sounds of the outside world are able to penetrate through the sounds of 360-degree waterfalls that encompass the entirety of the residence. I had also gained some inspiration from the Greek god Zeus and his … domain. I fused these styles together to create a true Fortress of Solitude.”
