Serene Master Suite Awash in Warm Whites
See how cream tones, matte black finishes and pops of brass make this Boston master bedroom and bathroom come to life
This Boston master bedroom is located on the second floor and includes three windows overlooking a bucolic backyard, which is why the homeowner asked designer Dana Arazi Levine to create an interior with muted, serene hues that wouldn’t distract from the lush views. The result is a fresh space awash in creamy tones with touches of matte black and brass, which continue into the remodeled master bath.
The nightstands are blackened steel with a mirrored top. A pair of brass swing-arm table lamps atop them are adjustable and provide great light for reading in bed. A new distressed area rug and an assortment of throw pillows on the bed provide subtle touches of color.

On the wall opposite the bed, Arazi Levine removed a pair of mirrored sliding closet doors in favor of custom floor-to-ceiling built-ins. French doors open to reveal a mix of cabinets, open shelving, closet rods and a wall-mounted flat-screen TV. “There’s really no room for a dresser in the bedroom, so maximizing storage space was key,” the designer says.
At the entrance to the bathroom, a small open closet area with four white oak shelves and a hamper underneath provides storage for linens and other bath accessories. The wall to the right of the shelves conceals a chimney from the first-floor fireplace. Arazi Levine added a pair of brass hooks on the wall for towels.
Before: The former bathroom included a toilet in the center of the room, a vanity against the back wall and a shower-tub combo along the right side.
After: Arazi Levine reconfigured the bathroom layout by adding a walk-in shower to the left side of the room and a vanity and toilet along the right side. “The homeowner was fine with having no bathtub, which allowed us to put in a light and bright walk-in shower that really opens up the space,” she says.
The bathroom floor and side wall of the shower are covered in off-white hexagon porcelain tiles. “I used a grout that matches the color of the tile so the hexagon shapes are very subtle,” Arazi Levine says. “I wanted the focus to stay on the marble feature wall in the shower.”
The feature wall is a large slab of marble, with matte black fixtures. A fixed glass shower door allows light from the window to flow into the room, keeping things bright.

The homeowner didn’t want a double vanity, but she did request enough counter space to create a makeup area, with an opening for a stool to slide underneath. “It provides just enough space for her to sit down and apply her makeup,” Arazi Levine says. “There’s great natural light in the morning, and we added warm sconce lighting above that’s perfect at night.”

The master bedroom is layered in many shades of white, including the walls, drapes and bed. “We didn’t want the room to feel too cold or harsh, so all of the whites in the bedroom run toward the warmer side,” Arazi Levine says. The designer covered the walls in Benjamin Moore’s Simply White, which she says has hints of yellow that warm up the tone.
The pleated curtains are a thick ivory cotton and black out light when closed. “I didn’t add any shades, in order to keep the views unobstructed,” Arazi Levine says. The curtains are hung from matte black rods that visually connect to the black fixtures in the en suite bathroom.
