I entertain a lot, from large outdoor parties for up to 30 to intimate dinners inside for 8. My guests are always willing to bring something and also to come early if needed to help out. My secret is to use Evite invitations. I can describe the theme and also add a "what to bring" list. After the guests R.S.V.P. with a "yes", "no" or "maybe" that they will attend, they can pick a dish (or whatever else I put on the list) then the number of that particular dish (e.g. side dish, dessert etc) gets removed from the total needed. This keeps the repeats to a minimum and allows everyone to pick something they are comfortable in contributing!

We do this type of entertaining quite often for the same reasons and it works well.
