Did you know that there are hundreds of thousands of kids’ bedrooms on Houzz? From them I have picked these 20 rooms to illustrate the premise of this series: While it takes many design elements to make a room beautiful and embracing and functional, there is often one particular thing that really kicks it up a notch — gives it that something extra.

This cottage-y playhouse bed is the fanciful and spectacular centerpiece of this bedroom. Three of my four granddaughters would be in absolute rapture over this over-the-top creation. (The oldest, who is 10 going on 30, would sniff in disdain. But what does she know?)

But special touches need not break the bank. In fact, most of the things I am going to talk about are doable on a minimal budget, with a little bit of labor. Like the pink painted ceiling above. The ceiling is the perfect spot to make that special statement.

Or go for maximum impact with a rich, red raspberry on the walls, augmented with a stenciled (or hand-painted) design like these flowers. I love how they pop against the custom background color, and how their classic white is repeated in the bedspreads.
Or go for stripes! This striped wall combined with the geometric rug is a bit brazen — but then, when has a child’s room ever been about subtlety?

Rugs can make all the difference. Imagine this bedroom without the chocolate and cream stripes of this area rug.

I can’t decide if the single thing in this room is those to-die-for vintage beds or the wallpaper. Both are great. But on final consideration, I’d have to pick the charming dog rocker.
Another place to make a room-changing statement is the headboard, as with this ethnic and colorfully dramatic custom rendition in Florida.
Even the simplest, most generic element — when used well — can make a room. Take the black lampshade out of this space and poof! Magic gone.
I feel the same way about the violet border on this curtain.

Something as basic as bedding can make a room stand out. Take the quilts in this Oregon bedroom. Isn’t this a stunning mix of colors and patterns?
Even a single quilt can be that one magical thing. Sure, this is a really efficient use of space. But that Americana quilt totally wakes up the room.
Two of my four granddaughters are twins, which helps explain my reaction to this room. I don’t know whether to swoon or to covet. But I definitely yearn for the chandelier, which is the single item that takes this delightful bedroom to another level.
And how about this to-die-for lamp?
