Agreed Robert Woods. There are several different types of “hybrid” mattresses which are made using different materials. The most common “hybrid” mattresses are made using latex, memory foam, polyfoam and coils. Some companies use high quality materials (which are more durable, more comfortable and healthier) and other companies use low quality materials (which are less durable, less comfortable and less healthy). Make sure you know the specifics of all layers in your “hybrid” mattress and select the “hybrid” mattress that has the highest quality materials, within your budget.

The 3 most popular types of “hybrid” mattresses are as follows:

1.) Innerspring/Latex Hybrid: This "hybrid" mattress is popular among the most knowledgeable people in the industry. The best quality “hybrid” mattress in this category has a 100% natural latex top comfort layer (make sure it is 100% natural latex and not synthetic latex) and a pocketed, fabric-encased coil core (instead of cheaper quality coils). This “hybrid” mattress gives you some of the benefits and the durability of sleeping on 100% natural latex, combined with the familiar feel and response of an innerspring core. This is the best choice for a “hybrid” mattress.

2.) Innerspring/Memory Foam Hybrid: This "hybrid" mattress is attractive to those who like the feel of memory foam but also prefer the familiar feel and response of an innerspring core. This is typically the cheapest “hybrid” mattress you will find. It has a memory foam top comfort layer (make sure the memory foam has a high density to be a durable choice and certi-pur certified, which is safer than chemical filled memory foam) and a pocketed, fabric-encased coil core (instead of cheaper quality coils). This “hybrid” mattress will often include other materials in its layers, so make sure you know the specifics of each layer and make sure the materials are high enough quality and density to be a durable and comfortable choice.

3.) Polyfoam/Latex Hybrid: This “hybrid” mattress typically appeals to those who like the feel of sleeping on latex but who are looking for a less expensive option than a 100% natural latex mattress. It has a 2" or 3” top comfort layer of natural latex (make sure it’s 100% natural latex and not synthetic latex) and a polyfoam support core (make sure the polyfoam support core is 1.5 lb to 2 lb density for more durability and certi-pur certified for the healthiest option). This “hybrid” mattress gives you some of the benefits and the durability of 100% natural latex, at a more affordable price.

I tried several versions of mattresses recently. Had to move away from box springs because even with good ones my husband and I were waking each other up moving around. Tried a Casper and didn't like it. Then we tried a Purple and OMG, best mattress ever! It's a totally different technology, designed for hospitals to prevent pressure points. Back never hurts, don't have to shift to find the perfect position, doesn't get warm, super responsive and springy, no motion transfer. Our search is over. They have 120 day free trial. (I have no connection to the company.)
