Great tip about buying Japanese Maples that already have fall color. I bought a very expensive one several years ago in spring. I had researched online for a variety that was supposed to turn red in fall in Southern California. Although the tree was pretty, what a disappointment when autumn came and the leaves turned brown and shriveled up. I never thought to check out the maples in Fall, duh.

Hi Georgeiana: I like the idea of leaving the puddle for wildlife... otherwise, look to the native CA plants that grow around vernal pools - the reeds, rushes, etc.
