7. An Eichler-Inspired Home Rises From the Ashes
The original Joseph Eichler-designed house that stood here burned to the ground, sadly. But that gave the homeowners an opportunity to rebuild a home with the larger spaces they desired. With the help of architect John Klopf and Eichler specialist Henry Calvert, they crafted a new home that respects the historic Eichler neighborhood in San Mateo, California.
The new design includes a full wall of glass that opens the interior to the outdoors, a new guest suite, an enlarged garage and a new master bedroom and bath that open to the pool. The respectful execution, beautifully proportioned spaces and strong indoor-outdoor connections were what impressed readers most.

6. Modern Mountain Magic in Asheville
Homeowners Starla and Scott Campbell were very involved in the design of their new modern mountain home in Asheville, North Carolina, right down to this table, which Scott crafted from reclaimed railroad boxcar wood.
They enlisted architect John Petri, design and builder Sean Sullivan of Living Stone Design + Build and interior designer Laura Sullivan of ID.ology Interiors & Design to create a home that would fit right into the wooded surroundings and take maximum advantage of the mountain views.
To keep the modern style from leaning too sterile, they used as many natural materials and handcrafted items as possible. This includes stone walls, large custom barn doors and warm wood beams.

1. Modern Farmhouse Made for Entertaining
This couple found the perfect location in their favorite neighborhood of Austin, Texas, but the ranch house on the lot was damaged beyond repair.
They hired the architects at Arbib Hughey Design to come up with a home where they could interact with neighbors and host frequent get-togethers. Taking cues from vernacular farmhouse architecture, the team created a plan for two simple, staggered volumes connected by an enclosed space that resembles a breezeway.
The porch and gravel patio provide opportunities to socialize and greet neighbors walking by. And the bright open plan inside has a great flow for parties and flexible options that can change with the family.

Being an interior designer came in handy for Susan Small when she and her husband made plans to leave their home in Florida and hit the road for half the year in an RV.
Not thrilled with typical RV interiors — she feared the couple would feel cramped living in one and wouldn’t be able to work from the road — Small used her talents to transform the house on wheels into a colorful, stylish and roomy home away from home.
Custom cabinets rendered in grass green, light wood floors, a pleasing layout, smart storage, space to work and an electric fireplace made this a home that wowed us.
