9. Delightful Dry-Storage Bins
The end of an island can often go overlooked, but Amanda Heys of Locati Architects capitalized on the area in this Jackson Hole, Wyoming, kitchen by adding built-in dry-storage bins.
“It was a great usable space to put dry goods such as pasta and beans that added some color to the space and also stored them in a visible location,” says Heys, who used Houzz ideabooks to coordinate design details with her clients.

8. Artisanal Appeal
Designer Sarah Dane-Brown says her Connecticut clients wanted an updated transitional New England-style kitchen with details “harkening back to times when artisans were always involved in construction.”
To create that artisanal vibe, she added a pressed-tin ceiling, a classic marble tile backsplash and a custom island with built-in cookbook storage.

7. Island Excursion
Designer Rebekah Zaveloff of KitchenLab Interiors didn’t want to use a typical island consisting of a block of cabinets topped with a counter for this kitchen remodel in Oak Park, Illinois.
Instead, she designed one with legs on the seating side and varied massing to create more of a custom furniture look. The island countertop is Sapphire Pearl quartzite with a built-up mitered edge to give it a thicker appearance. This makes it stand out from the perimeter counters and adds to the custom look of the island.

5. Designer Details
For his own kitchen remodel in Laguna Niguel, California, designer Nate Fischer mixed materials and clever finds. The perimeter countertops are a dark gray soapstone with cut grooves that drain toward the sink. The island has a marble countertop with a waterfall edge. The sloped ceiling is covered in custom millwork. And to add a dash of color, Fischer sourced an antique Russian pendant light in pastel mint.
