4. Light It Up
Designer Natalia Avalos rearranged rooms in the San Francisco Bay Area house to put the kitchen in the former, much larger and more light-filled dining space, then vaulted the ceiling and absorbed adjacent spaces to expand its size to 250 square feet. Its new walnut island (which, like the white perimeter cabinetry, is topped with marble-look quartz) offers plentiful storage, a work surface and seating for four. Above the island, a pair of hourglass-shaped brass pendant lights wrapped in bleached rope add a wow factor. Above the sink, a wall of windows looks out to a beautiful Japanese maple tree.

3. Better, Not Bigger
After years of designing kitchens for clients, architect Angie Lipski of MMW Architects redesigned her own 184-square-foot Missoula, Montana, kitchen — starting with saving inspirational images to ideabooks on Houzz. Among her priorities were maximizing storage space, adding an island, upgrading a small cafe corner, installing a custom metal hood focal point and carving out a display area for her husband’s collection of Bavarian beer steins, visible in the illuminated cabinet on the right of this photo. What you can’t see here — but will see if you click the link below to the original story — are all of the smart, hidden pullouts, which include a high-density pantry and corner cabinet solutions.

2. Clean and Contemporary
The empty-nest owners of this 227-square-foot New York kitchen worked with design-build pro Paul Lopa to lighten up their dark cherry kitchen and give it a warm, contemporary style. Lopa had the new skinny Shaker-style perimeter cabinetry, walls and ceiling painted off-white and paired them with an oak island and other white oak details to add warmth. Creamy backsplash and floor tiles and a khaki-and-cream Naica quartzite countertop with subtle gold veining help keep the space looking clean and bright, as do the new, large windows above the sink. Meanwhile, a black range hood and coordinating black farmhouse sink add compelling contrast.

1. Updated Charm
Designer Jaime Dupes of Copper Sky Design + Remodel replaced outdated 1990s-era cabinets and removed a peninsula to create this efficient, countdown-topping 181-square-foot Atlanta kitchen. The space now features an island, a separate breakfast area and a tricolor scheme of white, maple-stained white oak and gray-blue. The homeowners shared with Dupes a Houzz ideabook filled with inspirational images early in the process, which in part helped them all arrive at the kitchen’s non-cookie-cutter cottage style. Among the new design’s many charms are a cerused (whitewashed) hood with a routed detail and a marble mosaic tile range backsplash.

Removing a bulky, inefficient corner pantry allowed interior designer Aniko Nicholson to add a large white oak island, showstopping range alcove, beverage fridge and coffee station to this earthy 252-square-foot Canadian kitchen — all while improving flow around the island and into the adjacent dining room. A shiplap ceiling that connects the spaces was inspired by the owners’ roots in Ontario’s cottage country, and reclaimed barn beams (including one over the European-style range) and a nostalgic cafe curtain over the farmhouse sink add to the rustic cottage charm.
