9. Bright and Botanical
Emily Elkins of Kendall Design Build and her client embraced a “more is more” approach when renovating this 5-by-8-foot bathroom in Royal Oak, Michigan.
Sage green details in the colorful botanical Schumacher wallpaper inspired the fresh color of the wainscoting, which is a beveled subway tile set in a running bond pattern. Elkins paired those with a simple white 24-inch, ready-made vanity topped with white quartz, then added a brushed gold faucet and handle set with an Art Deco style that complements the home’s 1920s Tudor-style architecture.

8. Sophisticated Soak
Chad Esslinger of Esslinger Design created this Illinois bathroom for a couple after they shared a Houzz ideabook full of inspiration photos with him.
The elegant room has matching deep blue vanities and whimsical scalloped mirrors flanked by LED sconces. Honed marble floor tiles laid in a herringbone pattern draw the eye to the acrylic soaking tub at the end of the room. Behind it, tiles in the same marble but in a 5-inch hexagonal shape continue up the back wall. A sparkling brass chandelier hangs from the vaulted ceiling above the tub, coordinating with other brass elements and infusing the room with glamour.

5. Pattern Play
A patterned tile in sky blue, gray and white creates a fun focal point in the shower of this beach-style British Columbia guest room suite by Magpie Interiors. The tile also echoes the blue-and-white squiggle pattern wallpaper in the adjacent bedroom. Meanwhile, the horizontally stacked rectangular tile on the shower’s back wall mirrors the tile above the white beaded-door vanity, and it’s all accented by an unexpected mix of black, gold and silver details.

4. Clean and Green
Taylor Harrison of Streamline Construction designed this 70-square-foot Newport Beach, California, hallway bathroom for the homeowners’ young son and occasional overnight guests.
Referencing inspiration photos they saw on Houzz, the couple requested a fresh and clean style. Harrison delivered it in the form of a blue-green single-sink vanity with a gray quartz countertop and a low-curb shower with walls covered in glazed blue-gray matte picket tiles. Matte white ceramic penny round tiles on the shower floor and in the niche transition to large-format matte white porcelain tiles on the main floor, while matte black plumbing fixtures and other accents add contrast and modern flair.

2. Feature Attraction
This Seattle bathroom by Heather Kirk of Kirk Riley Design was designed for use by overnight guests and family, which makes the grab bar in the shower-tub area and the ADA-compliant chair-height toilet particularly smart.
A kaleidoscopic pattern made of blue-toned Carrara Blanco and Thassos marble mosaic tiles creates a fabulous feature wall that highlights the 60-square-foot room’s depth rather than its narrow width. (The tile on the adjacent shower walls and heated floor is also marble.) Meanwhile, a cloth-like wallpaper and a double vanity with a storage tower and a hidden laundry pullout are in shades of blue pulled from the mosaic tiles, which helps to tie the room together.

1. Layers of Luxe
A couple with two young daughters tapped Terri Brien Interiors to design this quietly luxurious 100-square-foot bathroom in Ladera Ranch, California.
Its maple double vanity has European-style full-overlay cabinets with 1-inch-rail Shaker-style doors and drawers, and a white oak storage tower with ribbed glass fronts sits on the vanity’s Taj Mahal quartzite countertop. A creamy white backsplash made of two differently shaped tiles covers the vanity wall, as well as the top of the curbless shower and the shower area. Honey bronze knobs and pulls, satin bronze widespread faucets and a double sconce with a hand-rubbed antique brass finish add a subtle gleam to the layers of warm neutral tones.

This efficient bathroom is in a bright, clean-lined ADU in Santa Cruz, California, constructed by Santa Cruz Green Builders. Its sleek rift-sawn white oak vanity has slab-front doors with minimalist pulls, and its low-curb shower has walls covered in modern-looking vertically stacked rectangular tiles that are softened by a little bit of variation in their glaze. A woven rug with an earthy Southwestern palette and pattern adds warmth and texture, and a skylight washes the room with sunshine.
