Have done some research on my own. A good paint store will recommend the correct paint to use. As for me, not interested in the rustic look (lime wash) and I think I've found what I'm looking for which is a clear sealer available in matt, semi or wet-look gloss. Thanks for all your comments.

I'd like to see more information about the brick stain. The article was very informative about how to prep and use paint but the mention of stain was minimal. And no pix to demonstrate stain.

(Bob Marley, I agree with you about lime wash - make your own!)

This stain - is that just a watered down painty-type product that soaks in? Is it a variant of the lime wash? I am confused by all these terms and what the products are, how they are constituted. For instance there is water based (acrylic) paint, and alternatively there's oil-based paint. And likewise some wood stains are either water- or oil-based. More info on Brick stains please?

Not sure about 'stain' but the product I mentioned earlier, i.e. the sealer in choice of matt, gloss, etc can be painted over with a regular paint. With regard to heat from a chimney - sorry, don't know.
