What’s New in Flooring for 2026
See the latest wood and stone looks in engineered wood, laminate, luxury vinyl and porcelain debuting this year
When it comes to flooring, “warm” was the word at The International Surface Event held earlier this year in Las Vegas. The last few years have seen a warming up of colors in wood-look flooring, with midtones now dominating new collections of hardwood, laminate and luxury vinyl planks. The collections still have plenty of blonde choices, along with a few gray and dark brown options, but for the most part the grays that are showing up have brown undertones, replacing the cool hues of several years ago. And these days, plank surfaces tend to be more textured and rougher-hewn than shiny and super-smooth.
For those who prefer stone, there are plenty of new looks in natural stone as well as imitation marble, concrete, limestone and travertine, which are getting ever more realistic.
Here are flooring highlights from the Surfaces event, as the trade show for the tile, stone and floor coverings industries is known. Some of the new collections are available now and others will be rolling out through 2026.

First Press is the new hardwood collection of engineered white oak from California-based Cali.
The collection’s name refers to winemaking. Just as the first press of a wine brings out the finest expression of the grape, the new collection is designed to bring out wood’s finest expression, says Cali’s Mike Belprez.

Mohawk displayed new styles from its laminate RevWood Plus collection, including two of the Madison Aisle chestnut tones.
“For this year, we’re really seeing tones warm up,” says Mohawk’s Michelle Dailey. “So even if people are staying with more of the natural tones — that warm undertone. A little bit more of the buttery yellow coming out underneath, and creams. Everything we’re doing is warming up our portfolio.”

“There are blonde tones that are very modern, but also some blonde tones that have some texture and some variation to them,” MSI’s Fallon Crawford says. “And then, because medium browns are making a comeback, we brought in a medium brown and a greige-ish tone as well, to kind of round out the palette.”

A word about wear layers: The clear outer surface of a luxury vinyl plank or tile wears away under foot traffic and furniture, so the thickness of that layer is an important consideration.
The thickness is measured in mils, with 1 mil equal to one-thousandth of an inch. (About 40 mils equals 1 millimeter.) The thicker the wear layer, the more durable and long-lasting the tile or plank. Most residential vinyl wear layers range from 8 to 12 mils. Experts recommend at least a 20-mil-thick wear layer for heavily used areas.

Karndean’s new Koa Kai from its LooseLay luxury vinyl collection has a wavy grain inspired by a native Hawaiian hardwood. It measures 10 by 59 inches and has a 20-mil wear layer. It’s one of three new wood designs in the collection, the other two inspired by elm.
“Koa is actually a natural material that is very delicate in its natural form. So we’re able to replicate it in LVP,” says Karndean’s Rachel Amundson. She says LooseLay is glued down only on the edges, making it easier to replace a tile. Koa Kai will be available in late spring.

Karndean’s Sable Apres Oak is a new color in the Van Gogh collection. The color has gray undertones, a trend that helps transition from the driftwood-gray planks of recent years.
“This is kind of like a smokier look. But it’s warmer than a true gray, which is where we see things moving,” Amundson says.

Karndean’s Indy Urban Elm, a new color in its Van Gogh collection of luxury vinyl planks that will be available this summer, is at the lighter-toned end of the midtone trend. The planks were inspired by wood found at a lumberyard in Indianapolis, with distinctive grain, a few knots and natural imperfections.
It’s available in both glue-down and click-in rigid core, with a 20-mil wear layer. Like the rest of the Van Gogh collection, the planks measure 7 by 48 inches.

Karastan’s new Sandalwood Grove adds a bit of rustic design to its LuxeCraft Serenity collection of luxury vinyl with a WPC (wood-plastic composite) core. Pictured is Trinity, the darkest tone in the collection. The planks measure 9 by 72 inches.
Comparing it with last year’s launch of a clean-looking LuxeCraft style called Summerhill Chase, Sarah Duncan of Karastan parent Mohawk says: “We wanted to round it out with something just a little bit more rustic, with a little bit more character movement. So you’ve got things like these knots.”
Karastan’s Charlton Ivy is a new walnut-look WPC in the LuxeCraft Serenity line, shown in the Weston color.
Designers worked on the walnut design for about two years,
Duncan says. “We wanted to make sure we could achieve real natural coloration. Walnut is a hard wood to imitate, so we wanted to get that real wood-look visual,” she says.
The planks measure 7 by 72 inches and have a 20-mil wear layer.

Pergo’s other new WPC luxury tile in its Preferred tier is Sterling Cove. It has a more muted, softer color, seen here in Cornwall.
“Sterling Cove is going to be a little bit more rustic, so we’ve got some cracks and some knots in that design,” says Duncan of Mohawk, which owns Pergo. “We’re seeing that people are liking a little bit of movement in their floors. They don’t want it to be super, super clean anymore, because everyone went almost sterile with the gray.”
