I am looking into wood countertops for a kitchen remodel. I have been cautioned regarding the use of wood near a sink due to mold, which apparently can be quite pervasive. I intend to use an oil on the wood top, as opposed to a varnish. Based on posts I have read, I think this would work best for us. But I wonder: is there any way to seal the sides and underneath of the wood top around the sink to keep spores from penetrating and potentially spreading through the wood? Also—is this mold concern pretty isolated? Thanks in advance!

You should use a drop in sink and if possible one that goes back to the backsplash. We lived with a maple butcher block counter for 40 years. We had a stainless drop in sink with a drainboard by Elkay. The drainboard protects the wood from water and gives a landing place for a hot pan. The only problem we ever had was the small place behind the sink and between the backsplash, which was also maple. I sanded that tiny area and put three coats of oil based poly on the area. I also used a towel behind the sink when I was using the sink. We never had any mold problems and we kept an oil on the counter. We first used Watco Danish oil and then we used Waterlox. I have posted reviews of both products in this thread. I think the sink in an island might work better. There would be no crevice for water. We just moved to a new home and we did choose for quartz counters. I would have still liked wood but the builder did not offer that as a choice. Good luck!

Update--we did add a second sink and dishwasher in the morning room at our new house. I chose a Kohler farm sink and maple counters from Bally. The new area of the kitchen looks beautiful and I do not anticipate any problems.
