Make the bottom borders of mats a little wider than the other borders. If a mat is the same width on all sides, the bottom will appear narrower than the other sides when it's viewed at eye level. This optical illusion doesn't occur in large works with bottoms far below eye level, but the seemingly narrower border is annoying in medium-sized pictures. Having learned this in high school art, I wrongly assumed professional framers would automatically widen the bottom, but they did not (on two separate occasions, years apart--I'm a slow learner).

Hi cchane2, You are correct in that a "classic" bottom weighted mat border will never be out of style, and it does benefit some long horizontal and vertical image....not all, but many will indeed appear narrow at the bottom. As to your two experiences, many framers, like their consumer counterparts have drifted to even mat borders over the past 40 years.... but their is nothing ever wrong with what you suggest, a "weighted bottom border" mat. As long as it is NOT dramatically larger.
