I opted for a shower pan when redoing my master bath walk in shower. I wanted low, easy maintenance. Might not be sexy, but it will last forever, and is easy to clean. The wall tile is my bugaboo, as it is glossy and requires a squeegee every time I shower. Oh, so boring. Next time, matt will be the finish. Grout needs an industry-wide overhaul. It is a pain no matter what.

@gupge2013: Cement based grout is the most common used and probably has the most complains for the cleaning, mold/mildew problems. Common grout is cheaper than other types of grout and does require sealing every year to 2 or 3 years depending on how often the area that has this common grout is used.

Next time you need to have something done with grout, look into epoxy grout or acrylic grout in your research. As for brand names. Blue Wren (two posts above yours) as well as mine, provided more information on other type of grouts. Of course, they will be more expensive than the common grout, but then the choice is always yours.

Why are there no products covered like alumina silicate covered as candidates for shower floors--they create an impervious seal for floor/curb without grout and have many color and finish options.
