  - Description: An old farm landscape above a pond, the garden of Nearmerezero links residential gardens to productive hayfields and heirloom apple orchards. Native plants are used to transition from field and orchard to the newly renovated home, proving improved habitat resources for both wildlife and human inhabitants.

  - Description: This woodland garden is an amplification of the materials and experiential qualities of its Maritime Woodland site. In the woodland garden, the forest floor is planted with native mosses, ground covers and ferns in a series of bands radiating out from the house towards the shoreline. The initial linearity of the planted bands will become less prominent as the planting matures and colonizes the undisturbed areas between bands. ## Community Q&A

**Q: What is the type of woodland here?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi. I'm interested to know what the approx mix of trees are in this woodland : conifers/broadleaf trees? Is the soil damp, dry, acidic? Like the idea of incorporating mosses.... thank you.

A: Hi Melissa, it's a Maritime Spruce Fir Forest which is indigenous to the coast of Maine. Primary trees in this woodland include Balsam Fir and Red Spruce. White Pine and Red Oaks indicate the area was once cleared for agriculture.

**Q: can you tell me what the color of the house is?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Susan, GO Home, the building in the photo, was designed and built by GO Logic of Belfast, ME. I'm sure they can answer your question.

**Q: what is the age of this garden?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: This garden was planted in Spring 2007, this photo is from Spring 2008.

**Q: What are the plants with the purple tubular flower clusters?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Thanks

A: HI Johanna, The purple spike flowers are indeed Salvias, including 'Caradonna' and 'May Night' varieties.

**Q: Pink and Light Pink Flowers?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Does anyone know what the pink and light pink flowers are?

A: Hi Folks, the plant with the large purple spikes spilling into the path is Catmint, Nepata 'Walker's Low' the hot pink globes in the lower left corner are Armeria maritima and the lighter pink is Dianthus, though I can't remember the variety. The white and deep red in the background are peonies.

**Q: looking for the names of some of these plants** *(in Photo Questions)*

Do you know some of the names?

A: Sorry, there are just too many varieties in this garden for me to call them out individually. There are roses, salvias, peonies, poppies, echinacea, daylilies, playtcodon, siberian iris, knautia, geraniums.........
