I feel like I am drowning in looking at pics of fireplaces and not coming up with a potential solution. We just purchased a new home that has a vaulted ceiling in the family room/Living room and a fireplace. The fireplace is wood burning, which we like. The issue is aesthetically, it's really FLAT against the wall. It doesn't project away from the wall at all....AND it has this crazy high hearth that runs across the length of the room. Note- these photos are listing photos and not our furniture. We plan to get rid of the crazy hearth/plant wall...but will obviously still need some kind of hearth below the fireplace. (Because the firebox is that far off the ground.) We will be getting rid of the textured ceiling and painting all the trim, redoing flooring etc. We're looking for some way to give dimension and depth to the fireplace, but worry that the firebox would look strange and pushed way too far back if we don't approach the solution correctly. Here are some pics of the CURRENT situation: I realize I cannot do all of this, (too big, too far away from the wall) but I LOVE the look of this: As you can tell however, this fireplace sticks out into the room quite a ways. (WHICH I LIKE)...but I just don't think I can build out the front as far as this is and still have the firebox (where the wood sits and where you make the fire) look right (notice how little depth difference there is between the surface of the black layer, the stone surrounding it and the white trim? HELP! Anyone have any ideas about how to rectify a really BAD flat fireplace design and use the existing firebox? Thanks in advance! Cyndi A: Several years ago I asked a question about paint color and Patricia chimed in and told me that something I had hanging on my wall was outdated and ugly.... I don’t remember her exact words but she was really rude and it didn’t have anything to do with my question at all... then I looked at her profile and her stuff is, in my opinion, hideous!!!! I stumbled on this because I am in a similar situation with a flat fireplace and was looking for advice... thanks Patricia for the expert advice on how to help a flat fireplace 🙄 did you ever figure it out???? **Q: Cushion appears to be attached, but CAN it be removed to reupholster?** *(in Product Questions)* This would be important should a cushion be stained or damaged. A: yes... it is screwed on in two places on the under side of the chairs **Q: Kitchen Backsplash and Bar stool Decisions** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hi Everyone, I completely tore out our kitchen and we are installing a new one. The Amish are making my cabinets and the wall cabinets are all Knotty Walnut. The walnut cabinet picture is my exact door style. The island is a distressed off white. I have a bisquit colored farm sink, solid copper range hood, Wolf stainless stove, and a porcelain floor that reminds me of stone, in a Versailles pattern. My theme is a little eclectic. I live in an old farmhouse and I love the style without the "country" theme. I love rustic and distressed looks, mixed with new and clean. So very confusing I know. My biggest issue is the back splash. I did NOT order the 4" granite back splash because I like the look of a tile back splash and don't want to mix the 2. I am a subway tile lover, but not sure if it will work. I need help on that decision as well as bar stools. Do I go with a rustic bar stool or a classier bar stool? This is so much when you are designing an entire space by yourself and you are eclectic. I don't want it to look like a mishmash mess. :) Sorry for such LARGE pictures but I don't know how to shrink them. Thanks for any advice!! Lisa A: Well... I love the mix of the knotty walnut and the creamy distressed Island... the fact that the walnut is knotty makes it less formal and I think it will be a perfect mix!!!! The sink will be perfect and look good with the countertops and island. I would do a biscuit colored subway tile (to match the sink)... that will help pull it all together (I don't think I will ever get tired of subway tile) and the copper accent will be fun... and you can tie that in with your accessories.... It will be wonderful... especially as it starts to patina!!! Maybe an upholstered barstool? or walnut? and... maybe wait to do the barstools when the project is finished so you have a better idea of what will work or not. Can't wait to see it... please post pictures when it's done! **Q: What’s your biggest design dilemma?** *(in Home Decorating)* I am starting a new design blog and could use your help. My house is 15 years old and it is outdated now... the biggest problem is how to update colors etc when I really can't afford to get all new furniture etc. (i recently asked this question so if you want to look for more pictures of my dilemma they are listed here someplace)Like how do I tone this down with out changing everything? ;) **Q: the 80s fireplace has to go!How to arrange space with angled fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)* Need fresh perspective! The green marble, rounded hearth gas fireplace needs a complete facelift. Before finalizing our new design, we need some help with arranging the space with the fireplace on an angled wall and the walls of windows across the room. We use the space for both living and dining. The area in front of the fireplace is pretty much just wasted pass through space at this point. Kitchen island only seats 3 so this is our main gathering dining space. House was built in '60s and room added on with walkout below to lake in 80s. We love the windows and call it our treehouse. Room is lacking layering and the final touches that would make it soar. Any design tips would be so appreciated! see my hand made layout for dimensions A: have you tried to angle your table the same as the fireplace (there may not be enough room) but if there is that could really sort of tie it together and make it look like the fireplace has a purpose... :) I like the "bad" mock up that phuninthesun did for you... **Q: Wall art the missing link?** *(in Home Decorating)* Hi there! Our home has an open planned kitchen, dining room and living room. The dining room wall is a “shared wall” with the kitchen “Theke- sorry, don’t know the English word”, but basically sort of an island. The far left of this wall looks empty. I already have wall art for the dining room up. What should I do what that empty corner at the bar/island? A: well I like your "wall art" and I think Patricia Colwell Consulting is a jerk (obviously you like your art and that's why you hung it there) I love the letters and they look great with your style.
