She took a photograph that my husband had framed years ago along side of a painting one of his student painted years ago. She placed them side by side and then took a green plant and one of my tall glass vase. I like it here is where I am having a problem. Family member do not see this as a good design. They are not educated in design they are critical saying you don't put the same picture next together like I am. Help Houzz designer and DyI ers !!!!! A: I agree with Kelly & your family members & I'm a professional home stager in Dallas... It is all out of proportion and truthfully I'd take it all down. The mantle itself is actually higher than I'd expect to see - did you have this redone? There is a lot of empty space between the fireplace opening & the mantle itself and then it's limiting the size of items to place on or above it - the largest picture is actually too big anyway. I'd do something simple and long (horizontal) to help balance this. I'm going to attach a photo of a "short" fireplace wall with what kind of décor/artwork I'd recommend for yours. It's a long piece of metalwork - I think I found it at Hobby Lobby. You can always flank the mantle with 2 matching candle sticks or topiaries. Keep the rule of 3 in mind when decorating your mantle or other areas of the house. Hope this helps! **Q: Need help for my living room** *(in Design Dilemma)* I need help in decorating my living room.Please help me with some ideas of what needs to be done.(wall decor, window treatment,rug,..etc) A: A series of photos/art/screens on the back wall - a mirror or something round over the fireplace... They don't have to be as large as the samples in the photos - just help spread the visual field on that large wall. You can also do bookshelves or a better size desk on that large back wall eventually, or behind the sofa. **Q: Coffee table?** *(in Design Dilemma)* We just finished remodeling our living area, moved fireplace from back corner to center of room and placed TV over it. I'd also move the two oak barrister cabinets to the wall between the two swivel chairs, kind of like a reading "nook" feel.
