> Virginia Hand has done work for us over the years and recently completed our spectacular Zen garden. She was wonderful to work with as she is a true professional. She listens to your ideas and adds her expertise to deliver the atmosphere and garden of your dreams while being mindful of your budget. Virginia worked closely with Seattle Utilities and installed an irrigation system to ensure our water usage was reasonable. She also made recommendations on plants to minimize the water usage. Our garden is stellar and Virginia Hand Design is outstanding!

> Virginia has been extremely helpful in helping us design a yard/garden that's not only functional, it is manageable and meets our budget objectives. She spent a great deal of time with us figuring out solutions to some unique hurdles we had and our overall experience was very enjoyable. We would definitely use her again.

> Virginia Hand is an extremely talented and thoughtful landscape designer. She transformed our outdated, old and overgrown yard into a beautiful, fresh, updated and current masterpiece that everyone (including neighbors and passerby walkers) enjoys looking at. She has a unique ability to pair color, texture, hardscape and plant materials into a custom design that fit within our budget and visual interests. We highly recommend her and her expertise!

> Virginia is creative, professional and comes up with designs that we could never imagine. Virginia designed and project managed a redo of our back garden ( yard). The inspiration was the gardens and fountains of the Alhambra is Granada Spain. That was eight years ago, the garden has matured to a lovely oasis in the city. The sound of the falling water from the fountain, crunch of the gravel path and lovely evening fragrance from the Brugsmania (in the summer) is relaxing. We continue to work with Virginia through out the seasons. So looking forward to Spring when the Elderberries start to bloom.

> Virginia is wonderful to work with, very professional and a delight. She has vast experience and a beautiful portfolio of work to show for it. Not only is she a landscape designer, she has a plethora of resources that come together to execute against her designs and will manage the entire project so it is seamless and easy.

> Virginia designed and supervised our back yard make over. We were so pleased with the result that we hired her the following year for our front yard and a 'green roof' on our garage, where she again did a fabulous job. She was respectful to our desires and wishes, suggesting changes where our layman's knowledge clashed with what was possible from a professionals experience. She is knowledgeable, kind, and thoughtful in her approach and manner - a real pleasure to work with, and a true professional.

**★★★★★ — Classic Landscaping + Nursery, Jan. 2013**

> Great design and attention to detail from one of the most respected and professional landscape design firms in the Puget sound.

## Selected projects

  - Location: Seattle, WA
  - Photos: 3
  - Description: This entry garden was designed to complement the newly remodeled home and concrete hardscape. It had to be welcoming to visitors, and double as a play area. Septic tank risers provide child-proof containers and the overhead structure provides a visual buffer at the street.
- [mid-century modern with an asian flare](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mid-century-modern-with-an-asian-flare-pj-vj~815997)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 11
  - Description: An uninviting, long, narrow garden space becomes a functional and beautiful patio extension of the home. Two water features provide a restful ambience, and a view from the interior. A grill extends the kitchen and a fire pit becomes a gathering area.
- [entry gate and fence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/entry-gate-and-fence-pj-vj~159056)
  - Location: Seattle, WA
  - Photos: 2
  - Description: A front garden was created to match the style of home and new homeowners. The dark stained fence reuses metal rods from the previous construction.
- [relaxing days and magical nights](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/relaxing-days-and-magical-nights-pj-vj~816542)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: A small but elegantly-built garden was in need of renovation. The hillside garden forms an "L" shape around the house, most of it visible from the interior. We opened up the light by pruning back an overgrown laurel hedge and made a foliar tapestry in the entry space. On the hillside, a failed waterfall became the stage for a glass water feature. Glass by Barbara Sanderson at Glass Gardens NW. Installation by Robert McGillvray, Buffaloworks.

  - Description: This garden was designed to complement a green-built Lindal Cedar Home. There is a rain garden for runoff from the garage roof. A stone path creates a welcoming entry to the front porch and links the house to the garage. Sword ferns, salal, beach strawberry and other natives provide an understory for this no-lawn garden.

  - Description: New concrete retaining walls with a decorative cap replace rotting timbers. Stone benches create a visiting area at the sidewalk. This lively garden sets the tone for entrance to this beautiful home.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Tree Type in Pot** *(in Photo Questions)*

What specific type of tree is in the pot, not merely the general term. It is all so perfect.

A: Thank you. Sorry, but I no longer remember which variety of Japanese Maple we used there.

**Q: can you share more pictures on this project** *(in Photo Questions)*

i would like a similar fence built around my property but the contractor is requesting more information on this fence type and how it is constructed. Any detail you can share would be appreciated. thank you so much.

A: I did not draw out a detail on this, but worked with a wood contractor I trust. I believe he made a cedar 2x4 frame on the back side of the gate, and strengthened that by running a steel cable diagonally. 1x6 cedar boards were attached to the street side. The two halves of the gate line up beautifully. There is a drop rod on the left side, it's the right side that is usually opened.

**Q: Exterior color please?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Sorry, I don't have the color information. Client's house was already painted and my challenge was to create a garden to match.
