Ideas will be greatly appreciated. The roof, fascia, gutters and downspouts will remain as is, with exception of cleaning. Front door, garage door, windows and shutters will be painted. The front door is solid with an adjacent full glass sidelight. There is a full glass storm door that I am thinking of painting. The front door needs a pop of color. This place needs a new color palettte to liven it up. Maybe from paint and landscaping. THANKS! A: I would agree with the above suggestion to paint the house white. Pick some fun colors for the shutters and front door. Maybe a slate blue - that would look nice against both the white and the brick. I would change the pathway so that it allows for garden bed against the driveway. It would soften up the house as well as allowing that downspout to water the garden bed instead of shooting water across your pathway. Allow the new pathway - maybe bluestone to pick up the colors of the shutters - to go as wide as at the front right corner of the step. That will also give you a more welcoming approach to the front door. Add some lights that are more to scale with the size of the house and some landscape lights to light the pathway. Widen your garden bed on the right side and add some plants with different colors and heights. You need some trees also. If you have the budget to change the driveway, that could also be a nice improvement. After you paint the house, you will most likely see that the gutters and downspouts should be painted or changed as well. I did some quick photoshopping - attached - to give you a visual. I didn't paint your house, though. Good luck! it's going to be gorgeous! **Q: Ideas for pergola shade?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I would like to bring some shade to the area under this wooden pergola? Should I do a slide wire retractable shade? Or can I get away with just stapling sunbrella fabric to the top of the pergola? The shade being "retractable" is not that important to me. Just want to figure out something that works that is not too expensive. A: Just for an alternative... I was recently in Mexico and the hotel's pergolas were covered in the bamboo fence material that comes in rolls. **Q: My new home has no curb appeal. HELP, please** *(in Design Dilemma)* Front door on side of house, I'm okay with that.Wheelchair lift, which you can barely see will be going. A: I agree with Barbara about trying to make one continuous deck and move the stairs, if possible, leading directly to the front door. I would ditto everything mick50's suggested, especially eliminating both sliders and creating the front entry with a brightly colored hinged door with side lights and then using french doors for the secondary entrance. The french doors should be painted the same (non- attention getting) color as the garage door. Cover up the front of the porch with some sort of lattice and plant garden beds in front. Hard to tell a few things from this picture...is that a basement door bottom right?...what material is on the bottom portion of the garage? Whatever it is does not look special enough to be highlighted. I would paint it all the same color. Hard to tell what is going on under the snow, but it would be nice to make those planter beds in front of garage deeper, allowing for more plant material.
