Looking for Sherwin Williams colors. Thanks in advance! A: Are you looking to hire a designer to help you with this house? It definitely needs more than just a “comb-over.” I’m surprised to see people offering their services (via ideas and renderings) for free here. Just remember: you get what you pay for. Would it be appropriate if I asked you to tell me what price to list a house? Or would I first need to enlist you as my realto? **Q: Window above kitchen sink - yay or nay?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Help! Hubby and I have been debating this for weeks - whether to put a window above the kitchen sink as part of our renovations. It would be south-facing, looking out to the end of our driveway and some planting in front of our fence with the neighbour and will be a variation to our contract which cost an extra NZ$3.5K. We are sold on how it looks from the inside but do have lots of other windows providing light as well so could live without it if need be. However our issue is that the existing exterior cladding on that wall is brick and the theme around the original house is to have weatherboard above and below window cavities. But we think retaining the brick to the left looks a bit funny as it is such a narrow strip and makes the window appear off-centre from the outside. Any advice on whether to bother with putting in this window is hugely appreciated!! A: I vote for adding the window-- and make it more vertical/taller so you can see out at standing eye-level (5'-6" to middle of pane above finish floor). Get rid of the cabinet portion directly over the sink as this is impractical and will be a hindrance to workflow. I see the other skinny vertical window off to the left-- that's nice, too. Enjoy your new kitchen!! **Q: What color walls would one use for browns and burgandy** *(in Design Dilemma)* Kind of mixed matched colors but want to do an accent wall and the other neutral or possibly plank walls A: There is a lot going on in this room. I'm eclectic and love a good mix-- in this room, I think it would be nice to remove the pieces that are clashing. There seems to be two color schemes going on-- the muted browns and sage in the matching chairs, drapes, and the area rug versus the blue tiles around the fireplace (unless my iPhone is not showing the true colors). Rather than an accent wall, I suggest you select a strong color and paint all walls the same color. This will create a more uniform look and tie everything together. i think the red cranberry color in your area rug would look gorgeous in the room and would tie it all together. Remember to ask the paint store to cut it by 30-50% hue when painting the window walls so they won't turn dark. I've used Borscht (which is an ultra deep LRV 8) by Sherwin Williams. It's a rich Bordeaux red color. Something lighter in that family or that matches the red in your rug would be great. And if you can change your fireplace wall to be a neutral stone, that would become your focal point and would really stand out with the cranberry walls. Good luck and have fun! Tara **Q: How tall should my sideboard lamps be?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I got this great sideboard for $1000 online... it was crazy for me to buy something based on pics but the size was perfect. It turns out I love it. I'm starting to collect art and one large piece in the dining room is almost to the 8 foot ceiling above the new cabinet. I'm just looking for drama with two lamps flanking the painting and I'm looking for a sophisticated funky, artsy look. The lamp shown is 30" tall. I've got my eye on the wire lamps (w/see-through body of black twisting wire) shown in the second pic but they are 37" tall. Is my scale getting out of whack with lamps that tall or does the height of the painting demand height? Thanks in advance. A: Hi finndian, I love your choices and your room is looking great. I think the sideboard is perfect and goes with the chandelier. I like the large art piece, too. I don't think the large size art piece is the problem, but the image within the picture itself is of a larger scale than what's going on in your room with the furniture scale and that's what might be throwing some people off. I love the idea of the two lamps flanking it on either side; definitely go with taller lamps, and maybe solid based ones with some gravity to them- or use larger round diameter shades atop the black wire ones (those are a good height). I love the marble table-- it adds to the modern urban feel. I only wonder if it's going to be big enough to seat the number of people you're going to have around the table. It looks like it would comfortably sit 4, maybe six. Also, are the wall colors going to remain the current neutral greige? It looks good, but to add to the drama you've already got going, maybe consider painting the wall behind the sideboard a yellow or rust color (not too ultra deep, though-- choose a higher color reflective value). Or, you could paint the longer wall an accent color if you wanted to maintain the flow of the kitchen across into the dining room. Let us know what you decide to do. The main living space is basically like a small open apartment set-up. I need help with paint color scheme for the entry way, living room/dinning area/kitchen. We are soon going to be replacing all the furniture, painting, new windows, and giving our kitchen a "face lift". Any color ideas for walls, types of furniture for our small living room area, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I really like grays, light light blues, neutral colors. Just don't know what color should go where? What color of furniture to go with?
