## Community Q&A

**Q: Kitchen countertops: dark or light?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We recently moved into our house and the kitchen needs some tlc. The cabinets are not my first choice but they are in good condition and we are keeping them.

The dilemma is do we go with a dark countertop with a white subway tile backsplash or a light countertop with a creamy backsplash that will warm up the room? I am more traditional/transitional than contemporary but I do think a black honed granite would look great!

We will change the hardware and appliances as well.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

A: I would not go with a black countertop in here. Way to much contrast, I think it would feel out of place, almost commercial like...

**Q: Kitchen countertops** *(in Other)*

If walls are not exactly level, which countertops are best to use - granite, solid surface or quartz? With my formica I now have a small gap between wall and rolled edge that varies from size of little finger to size of index finger.

A: Remember, that backsplash has no give because it is attached to the countertop. The new countertop will come with splash installed separate. A lot more flexibility to get it to conform to the wall.

**Q: What color is this granite? How did you get it so thick?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: That's a laminated chiseled edge 6CM thick . The outer edge is tripled up and glued together. What's nice about the chiseled edge is it disguises the horizontal glue lines from the edge lamination. Look at the sink cut out, you can see the material is 2CM. That a great job, I love it. Monet is my guess, hard for me to tell the color. Cheers!

**Q: Can you guess what the budget was on this project?** *(in Before & After)*

This was a project that one of our customers submitted. The contractor on this project did an amazing job and added a lot of custom features.

Custom poured concrete counter tops
Custom built liquor cabinet with lock under breakfast bar
Induction stove
Double Oven
Pot Filler
Industrial Vent
Bread Drawer
Hidden spice racks
Fully expanding drawers with soft close
wine rack
custom back splash
custom valance over sink

Curious if anyone could guess what the cabinets cost and what the budget was on this project. For more pictures, I posted them under the project: http://www.houzz.com/projects/248628/Bordeaux-Shaker-with-Custom-Granite-Counter-Tops

A: 15K? What a difference!

**Q: Granite color** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi. Can you tell me what color this granite is? Thanks.

A: It looks like a light version of Kashmir Gold

**Q: Store Installed the Wrong Tile** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We purchased a light travertine with gray brushed look in it. The installer has installed the brown looking travertine. We looked at the contract and it only says "light travertine". We are very unhappy with the look of this tile, should we expect the correct tile to be installed?

A: Natural stone is just that, natural. Which means two stones are never going to be alike, even though it may be the same color... Were you not able to look at the Travertine before it was installed? Were you warned the color could vary?
