> We are renovating an old farm house on top of a hill in southern Vermont. Derek and Cody have been wonderful to work with. Their attention to detail and vision has been instrumental in successfully mixing the old and new in the main house, and capturing the sweeping views. We are looking forward to working with them again on our next project.

> Our family completed a full gut kitchen renovation with Derek and Markie. The experience was easy, fun, and aesthetically, the final results exceeded expectations. The process was thorough and clearly communicated. The details and scale were carefully considered. Markie was resourceful in sourcing unique items. We could not recommend their team enough.

> We recently completed a full gut renovation in a Boston Back Bay Brownstone Condo. Derek Bloom and Markie Mello were a fantastic choice. They were great collaborators in the design phase and had great attention to detail in the design phase and worked closely with me in the bid and building process. From beginning to end they were there with me and for me. I am very happy with the result and would highly recommend this firm.

> My husband and I had a fantastic experience working with Derek this year and would highly recommend Derek Bloom Architects for your next project! We purchased an outdated/1990s house on the Northshore that needed to be updated and reconfigured to more optimally utilize its 4000sqft. The extent of the project included a brand new kitchen, new master bathroom, relocation of the laundry area upstairs, new master closet and reconfigured master bedroom, remodel of the guest bathroom. We interviewed several architects and were more than impressed by Derek, his detail oriented approach, his ability to see the big picture (everything from the future potential of our yard, to the third floor staircase, to a more effective reconfiguration of the kitchen). We really liked Derek’s practical yet very creative/unique vision, his well balanced aesthetic and flexibility when it came to incorporating our ideas and needs for the space. He thought about everything - from what we and our child like to do today to what we might want from our house several years into the future. His design was an original, out of the box, very elegant solution for how to optimize our space while really showcasing the house in all of its beauty. He is also very cost conscientious and helped us visualize various options and their impact on our budget early on in the process (really helped us not to get ahead of ourselves with costs!). He is also very connected and introduced us to an excellent contractor. They worked seamlessly together and executed incredibly well on some of the more challenging parts of the projects. We both work in very time consuming jobs and relied on Derek to help us make small and big decisions (from the type of tile to the configuration of our master bathroom and completely reworked kitchen). We were blown away with the results. We keep saying that we feel like we built our own home because it looks so fresh, modern and yet it is so us. We definitely believe that Derek's design and our contractor’s flawless execution has helped enhance the value of our home. It goes without saying that Derek has an excelling work ethic and will move mountains to help you create your dream home. We would absolutely work with Derek again in the future.

> Derek Bloom Architects provided full service design for our new home. It was a 100% custom design. Derek Bloom Architects also provided construction oversight throughout the entire build process to ensure that the design on paper became a reality.
> Bloom has an amazing attention for detail and creativity. He is a true student of all categories of architecture and attacked our project for a Georgian Colonial residence with a commitment to be true to the period, while juggling our desires for a modern family home. He did an incredible job with a focus on symmetry, proportion, function and style. Bloom also designed the perfect floor plan, with spacious room, yet not too big; perfect for entertaining small or large groups and for daily family life.
> The finished details make this home a true piece of architectural art. The custom designed moldings, fireplaces, coffered ceilings, exposed beams, curved walls, plaster moldings, unique hardware, etc...left no room untouched with special details.
> You should not miss the hidden bar in the family room - tucked under the main stairs. The bar hides behind panels that open for entertaining, but close when not in use, disguising the opening as a wall of panels.
> In summary, Bloom designed a dream home that incorporates everything we wanted in our home. We asked him to design a new home that looked like it was 200 years old, yet functioned for our busy modern family. He hit a home run. You just must see this house. It is perfect in every way.

- [Winnipesaukee](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/winnipesaukee-pj-vj~6118130)
  - Location: Center Harbor, NH
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: We're excited to share the progress for a new waterfront house on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. The sustainable design employs geothermal heat and cooling, super-insulated walls, triple-pane windows, and ICF foundations, ensuring minimum use of resources as well as low cost of operation. Wetland areas, shoreline, and property setbacks greatly restricted the build-able area of the site. The building form and the programmatic layout of the interior shifts and jogs to accommodate the site. T…

  - Description: This whole-house renovation had an emphasis on opening up the living spaces on the second floor to create one large space for living space and entertaining. BLOOM removed most walls and combined five rooms into one, yielding a bright open space with panoramic views of the neighborhood from front to back. A new sculptural stair in an was built in the center hall, creating new sightlines between floors, increasing sunlight and providing a vertical art gallery. The stair’s sinuous lines and dark gr…

  - Description: A mid-century predecessor to the Acorn Deck House, this kit-of-parts home is modeled after the "Technobuilt" prototype, invented by the same designer, Carl Koch, in 1953. BLOOM's extensive experience in the specialized construction of deck houses, as well as mid-centrury restorations, renovations, and reinventions, prepared us for a high-touch renovation to seamlessly update all rooms, while bringing out the beauty of the original house. A common challenge with this typology is to brighten space…

  - Description: Adjacent to a 40 acre conservation area, this house on a slope is designed to maximize the connection to the woods, while maintaining privacy from this popular public hiking area. Despite its location in a suburban neighborhood, the house is made to feel like a wooded retreat. With passive-solar strategies, the house orients northward to nature, while allowing the southerly sun to enter through large openings and clerestories. A geothermal system provides the hot water, heating and cooling .

  - Description: A full renovation to a residence on a historic tree-lined street in our South End neighborhood. BLOOM opened up the walls to create interconnected light-filled living spaces, accentuated by high gloss ceilings, and a subtle color palette. The spaces were designed to offer flexibility of use, with a front room serving as a guest room or study, an oversized kitchen island large enough to seat six, and a rear bedroom with built-ins allowing office use. - Description: This lovingly renovated and reconfigured residence in Boston’s historic Back Bay melds the eclectic historic influences of the original late-1880s Sturgis and Brigham building with a contemporary sensibility about spatial organization. Occupying a quadrant of the original entry level, the apartment contains both the former building entrance—now transformed into a guest room—and a soaring ballroom rich with Gilded Age ornamentation, Rococo Revival elements, and 18th-century French floral motifs.…

  - Location: Dartmouth, MA
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: Starting with a traditional shingled camp on the Slocum River, the Horseneck project transformed this compact vernacular building into a more modernist composition, connecting interior to exterior, overlapping programmatic areas, maximizing available daylight, and prioritizing outdoor living. With the river setting the backdrop, we began the design with an abstract composition of planes and volumes, which would serve to open the house, frame the views, and add depth to the landscape. The new gla…

We eliminated columns, stripped ornate moldings, and raised ceilings to create a clean envelope to work within. The resulting layout emphasizes an open flow of space, a connection to the landscape and outdoor living spaces, and functional workspace for the home's center of activity. The client wanted something that felt appropriate for the more historic home, yet modern…

Utilizing a rough palette of Deer Island Granite monoliths, local black slate, Red Cedar, and Eastern White Pine, the spaces derive directly from the local geology and woods.
