I'm trying to renovate the kitchen and great room and I'm struggling with a design idea. If I take out the wall and fireplace, how would you set up the family room/TV and add an island bar? I'm struggling to envision the most functional design for entertaining. Thank you. A: Hello Elizabeth, just checking in and wondering if you found out your answer to your kitchen dilemma? **Q: What color cabinets?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Trying to decide what color to paint cabinets. All white? A light gray? White with gray island. Can't keep honey color because we got new floors and feel new quartz counter doesn't pop enough. Walls are SW morning fog (a bluish gray). Worried too much white because of appliances, worried too dark with gray... A: White cabinets will make your new quartz pop, but be careful with the white as your floor has some warmth in it and your walls and the quartz have cooler tones. Look for a neutral white. Not too ivory or too blue-white. **Q: What is this style? Do you think is modern or contemporary?** *(in Design Dilemma)* I did it my self at first I was looking for a Scandinavian look but wood was more expensive than glass in my country. I already bought two natural fiber carpets for the two spaces and a pendant chromed industrial lamp for the dinner. I'm not sure what to do with the wall where the photo frames are. I m thinking in using a giant canvas like the Bardot photo instead of the small frames for a more dramatic look. What do you think? A: I agree your look is modern. Your use of streamlined furniture, glass and chrome places you in that style. I also think the large Bardot Canvas would be stunning but I might add a little designer tip. What looks to be the hallway? Right now you have something round hung there? I would replace that with a vertical rectangle modern mirror. It will add a lot of reflective light to that space that looks dark and add a nice larger architectural line, which will work well with new larger art. All about scale. **Q: HELP WITH KITCHEN TO MODERN** *(in Design Dilemma)* I'm moving into a condo and this is the kitchen: I'm not sure how I feel about it. What are some minor things u can change/add to make it look more modern/rich. Should I paid the cabnits all black? Should I paint the brown stripes on cabnits white? Should I just take out the doors and put a certain colour background to the cabnits? What colour? Thanks guys A: I would suggest not painting the cabinets also, especially black. I would get rid of that beige color wall paint, I think a soft grey paint will play off the counter top and backsplash as well as unite the room more. You will need to select a grey paint color working off the counter as there are so many shades. But Sherwin Williams has some lovely greys: Repose, Mindful. Paint the wood trim to white on the base of the cabinets but ask an expert at paint store for durability for cabinet application. I would not clutter the top of the cabinets but you could hit home goods and buy one or two nice modern pieces to display at the top an pull the eye up and add style.
