> Not at all happy with results. Had grading done after new septic with seeding. Very uneven in several areas. Around septic pipes there is a mound of dirt. One area does not look like it was done at all with adding fill as we had to dig down on the back of the shed to get it even. Never in inspected to my knowledge after complaint.

> Many thanks to Tim Stenzel, Chris and Brandon for a great design and installation. We wanted plantings that would be somewhat native, non-invasive and compliment our charming little home in the country. The team did a great job through the whole process! They even repaired a spot where an old tree had been taken out which was not on the invoice. Nice attention to detail and doing that little something extra is such a great thing! We are delighted and would highly recommend Avant Gardening & Landscaping! THANK YOU!

**Comment from Avant Gardening & Landscaping Inc:**

> Thank you so much for sharing your experience and for including the photos! The crew very much enjoyed the time they spent on your property. We look forward to seeing everything fill in.

> Avant Gardening designed my entire front and back yards in 2014 and since then they've helped me realize my landscaping dreams in stages as my budget allowed. My priorities are wildlife benefit, ease of maintenance and a natural elegance that fits comfortably into the low-key neighborhood I live in. Projects have included front foundation plantings, a north side privacy planting including transplanting 2 crabapple trees from the back yard (away from the walnut tree) to the front yard, planting several hemlocks and arborvitae in the back, adding a bluestone walk-through and mowing strip to the terrace, plus tree and shrub pruning & staking I wanted done by experts and last spring (2017) the piece de resistance was the front yard transformation that I dreamed about for years. My front yard is tiny but I dreamed of undulating berms, a winding walk, a curved stone wall among the berms and a sheltering tree. I thought it was too much to ask for a postage stamp sized yard but the designer showed me how it could be done. She suggested an oak tree instead of a ginkgo because oaks are far more wildlife friendly, convinced me that a bluestone path wouldn't be too fancy for my neighborhood (she was right), added boulders from their stone yard that I fell in love with and included a serviceberry tree and bubbling water feature for the birds. Not least of her talents, patience, she patiently answered my thousand and one questions about everything, discussed my plant choices with me if I wanted this plant instead of that one, eased every worry and concern (I was freaked out that the boulders might look out of place), stuck with me, encouraged me and made it happen. The execution was flawless thanks to Nathan the foreman and easy-going Damien. Nathan has worked on all my projects and I trust him now without reservation even if I can't be at home while they work. The curving bluestone path set on a 45 degree angle, is gorgeous, the berms are as perfectly proportioned as they should be and the beautiful black and rust colored boulders fit right in. The stone wall and water feature are future projects I look forward to having Avant install in the near future. My initial designer now works at Olbrich, she's a plant lover like me and wanted to do more digging in the dirt, so she introduced me to Tim Stenzel before she left. Tim has taken over managing my projects including the front yard, delivering trunk loads of plants to my home when I couldn't get out to the nursery, and patiently answering design questions which I never seem to have an end of. Everyone at Avant, designers, nursery personnel, maintenance crew and the owner, Liza, are friendly, interested, helpful and professional. I have never been unhappy in any aspect of working with Avant. I highly recommend Avant to anyone looking to invest in landscaping and who wants to work with people who value their clients and the environment.

**Comment from Avant Gardening & Landscaping Inc:**

> Thanks for your kind comments! We've really enjoyed helping you to bring your vision to life. We're excited to see things fill in and are ready for future projects when you are! :)

> I hired Avant to clean up and design a new patio in an overgrown area that had been enclosed in a tiny dog pen and an overgrown area in my front that is always overtaken by forest and weeds from the empty lot next door. The project has turned out beautifully with gorgeous stone patio tiles, a dry creek bed to address my drainage issues, beautiful boulders and rocks and plantings to my style of taste. I was able to choose a boulder for a water feature on the patio and can't wait until spring to turn it on. The front plant bed is so pretty and looks so much better than the rotting railroad ties that were there. Tim was amazing to work with to get my design established and the guys doing the landscaping work were polite, hardworking and very talented! I really enjoyed working with this company and would use them again and recommend them in a heartbeat!!!

**Comment from Avant Gardening & Landscaping Inc:**

> Thanks for the review. We really enjoyed working on this project with you and are very proud of how it turned! We'd like to take some photos once the plantings fill in but for now here is one just after construction. Looking forward to seeing things develop!

> Avant designed and built a landscape that transformed our entire terraced backyard. The project was a complete renovation that included several large retaining walls, two sets of steps, a natural stone patio, trees, bushes, and perennials. Their landscape architect created a plan that considered our wants, needs, and budget. His timely responses to our questions and willingness to work within our needs set a positive tone for the project. Once work began, the crew worked diligently everyday until the 4-week project was completed. They were friendly and courteous and knew what they were doing. We appreciated that they kept the site tidy and neat by cleaning up at the end of each day. The end product was exactly what we wanted and a true work of art! We highly recommend Avant for your landscaping design and implementation needs.

**Comment from Avant Gardening & Landscaping Inc:**

> Thanks for your comment and kind remarks. It was a pleasure to be involved with your project from start to finish! We loved being a part of the transformation and can't wait to see how all the plantings fill in. We wish you many years of enjoyment!

> Avant Gardening did a great job installing a patio with natural stone. They were meticulous about preparing the site, and followed best practices mulching in the surrounding area. The project was done in a timely fashion for the price quoted. \[Note: the pictures aren't as pretty as the patio is, due to some other work that needs to be done, but they show the beauty of the stone\] The design was exactly as I wanted, and the workers were excellent, knowledgable, and clearly experienced.

> Tim S. and the rest of the crew and Avant Gardening and Landscaping did an outstanding job turning our fairly vague ideas for a backyard overhaul into a workable plan. They came up with great suggestions for addressing some considerable drainage problems, and successfully transformed our yard into something we could be proud of! During construction, the crew was very hardworking, prompt, and respectful of our property.

  - Description: One of Avant Gardening & Landscaping's longest standing clients, you won't find much lawn to mow at this property! Almost every inch is planted with a wide array of flowering perennials (even the street terrace!) We helped create the "bones" of this landscape with the natural stone terraces and stepping stone paths, but most of the credit must be given to our client! She is truly passionate about gardening and it shows! This past summer, her garden was featured in Olbrich Botanical Gardens Home…

  - Description: The backyard of this home was shady and wet making it difficult to grow grass. Drainage issues resulted in flooding after heavy rains. Working with the client we designed and installed a dry creek bed, planting and patios. During rain events the creek fills with water and directs it to a rain garden. A small flagstone patio makes a nice area for a fire pit while a larger patio, also flagstone, creates a private space for gathering and family dinners.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Does plant hardiness account for windshield factor?** *(in Midwest Gardening)*

Say a plant is hardy to zone 5, meaning it is hardy to -20. Does that account for the windshield factor too? Like if they say it is -8 degrees outside, with a windshield factor of -25, does that mean your plants that are hardy to -20 probably not survive, or is the zone hardiness factor only taking account the ambient temp of like -8 in this case?

A: Good question! Wind chill only affects people or rather the way we perceive the temperature. Plants are only affected by the actual air temperature which is what the USDA Zone Plant Hardiness map takes in to account. The real issue with winter winds on plants is that it can dry them out. This is one reason it's important to make sure your plants (esp. evergreens) are well watered heading in to winter.
