**★★★★★ — cobo77, June 2014**

> John Senhauser is a consummate professional and represents the epitome of what an architect should be. Quite simply, the opportunity to work closely with John and his team was the most memorable facet of our project. While his strongest attributes include the precision of his work and his attention to detail, we also discovered that he enjoyed the architect-client interplay, and what resulted was a very organic process. He remained intimately involved with the aesthetics of the project until the end, which we appreciated, because he has a very strong perspective and an exceedingly high level of taste. Ultimately, his design was able to seamlessly meld together 19th century late Victorianism (our house) with a contemporary addition that met all our needs. John Senhauser Architects receives our highest recommendation .

## Selected projects

- [Walnut Woods Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/walnut-woods-residence-pj-vj~33687)
  - Location: Indian Hill, OH
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Taking its cues from both persona and place, this residence seeks to reconcile a difficult, walnut-wooded site with the late client’s desire to live in a log home in the woods. The residence was conceived as a 24 ft x 150 ft linear bar rising into the trees from northwest to southeast. Positioned according to subdivision covenants, the structure bridges 40 ft across an existing intermittent creek, thereby preserving the natural drainage patterns and habitat. The residence’s long and narrow massi…
- [Pima Canyon Residence Interiors](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/pima-canyon-residence-interiors-pj-vj~33676)
  - Location: Tucson, AZ
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: Our client initially asked us to assist with selecting materials and designing a guest bath for their new Tucson home. Our scope of work progressively expanded into interior architecture and detailing, including the kitchen, baths, fireplaces, stair, custom millwork, doors, guardrails, and lighting for the residence – essentially everything except the furniture. The home is loosely defined by a series of thick, parallel walls supporting planar roof elements floating above the desert floor. Our a…
- [1112 Fort View Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/1112-fort-view-residence-pj-vj~7109654)
  - Location: Cincinnati, OH
  - Photos: 13
  - Description: Sited on a steeply sloping wooded bluff at the end of the street, the existing single-story home failed to meet the needs of a growing family. By adding first out, then over the former structure, we were able to house the bedrooms, a family loft, and a library while enhancing the more public functions of the home on the floor below. A sweeping terrace wraps the southern façade taking advantage of the scenic Ohio River Valley and the horizon beyond.
- [Edwards, Colorado Kitchen Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/edwards-colorado-kitchen-renovation-pj-vj~7479949)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: Located in the mountains of Edwards, Colorado, this kitchen renovation sought to create a modern and more thoughtful space. The client requested more light and a more intentional design, as the previous layout did not promote gathering nor did it have any sense of continuity. The main driver in the new kitchen layout was flipping the location of the range and refrigerator. By centering the range with the trusses above and framing them with an alcove the range wall becomes the focal point of the…
- [Indian Hill Private Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/indian-hill-private-residence-pj-vj~33877)
  - Location: Indian Hill, OH
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Perched atop a wooded ridge, this residence derives itself and emerges from its site – inevitably grounded but exceeding its limits to engage with the trees beyond. The family spaces of the first floor loosely occupy the free plan while above, explicit spaces are contained in distinct volumes. Four vertical “walls of light” separate these private spaces while illuminating the floors below. Actively embracing the sky, these shafts become the locus of ornament conceived as a transparent and transl…
- [1125 Fort View Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/1125-fort-view-residence-pj-vj~7109787)
  - Location: Cincinnati, OH
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: The first of seven homes new or renovated by John Senhauser Architects on Fort View Place in the Mount Adams neighborhood, this project took an existing two apartment flat and converted it into a single-family home. The insertion of a central stair volume connects the previously discrete spaces while the addition of a new third story provides a master bedroom and bath. A curved terrace extends off of the living room and is joined to the roof terrace above by a complementary spiral stair.
- [Maineville Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/maineville-residence-pj-vj~5628485)
  - Location: Maineville, OH
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Located on a wooded family property, the Maineville Residence takes the theme of an iconic farmhouse. With the creation of a dog trot by a detached garage, a partially covered terrace was inserted along the south façade, overlooking the woods and pond beyond. The north face provides a more formal entry sequence. The farmhouse shape with its lean-to addition provides a regimented container for the open plan of the first floor, and the explicit plan of the second floor. The client being a self-tau…
- [1136 Fort View Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/1136-fort-view-residence-pj-vj~7109823)
  - Location: Cincinnati, OH
  - Photos: 16
  - Description: Situated in an urban hillside community comprised of detached rowhouses, the project site is a 25 ft wide by 130 ft deep lot on a bluff offering impressive views of the Ohio River Valley. As an adaptation and departure from the rowhouse type, this residence explores the relationship of home and its surroundings. Contributing to the character of the design is the challenge to create a domestic experience capable of affording privacy while embodying the diverse lifestyle of an active couple. Given…
- [Walnut Woods Studio](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/walnut-woods-studio-pj-vj~2338904)
  - Location: Cincinnati, OH
  - Photos: 10
  - Description: When the new owner of this existing log residence contacted us about designing a detached ceramics and jewelry-making studio, we knew this would be both challenging and exciting. The 155 foot long house spans 45 feet across an intermittent creek on a steeply sloping, heavily wooded site. Our strategy was to inseparably link the house, studio and site to one another, minimizing disruption of the woods (only one tree was relocated for construction). Using the radius of the porte cochere drive, the…
- [Mount Adams Kitchen Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/mount-adams-kitchen-renovation-pj-vj~33880)

- [Hyde Park Kitchen Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/hyde-park-kitchen-renovation-pj-vj~33883)
  - Location: Cincinnati, OH
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: This Hyde Park Tudor residence built in 1936 has uncharacteristically more French than English inflections. It is finely detailed with cut stone, a sculpted tower, terra cotta tile roof and roof finials. The new owners and designers reviewed all proposals and selections to ensure the renovation would be sensitive to the home’s character, and that the materials employed would be timeless. Particular attention was given to accommodating a contemporary lifestyle within the context of the formal fra…
- [The Palisades of Mount Adams](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/the-palisades-of-mount-adams-pj-vj~33885)

- [1131 Fort View Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/1131-fort-view-residence-pj-vj~7109804)
  - Location: Cincinnati, OH
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: Nestled into the hillside of Mount Adams, this single-family home features a two-story living room, interior auto court, and private roof terrace. The two-toned street façade disguises the double lot width of the building and allows for it to blend with the proportions of the adjacent row houses. The front door is moved off the street allowing access into the middle of the home, thereby extending the threshold and entry sequence.
- [1137 Fort View Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/1137-fort-view-residence-pj-vj~7109872)
  - Location: Cincinnati, OH
  - Photos: 9
  - Description: Sitting directly across the street from 1136 Fort View, this home reinterprets the row house plan type that comprises the neighborhood. Owing to its limited views rather than looking outward, this home chooses to be inwardly focused. Mediating between earth and sky, the upper floors of explicit spaces are pierced by four light wells illuminating the open living level below. The vertical and horizontal entry progression extends the gradient between the publicness of the street and the privacy wit…
- [1138 Fort View Residence](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/1138-fort-view-residence-pj-vj~7109879)
  - Location: Cincinnati, OH
  - Photos: 6
  - Description: Designed as a speculative venture, the row house at 1138 Fort View Place overlooks the Ohio River from each of its four levels. The front façade of the home acts as a transitional piece, blending the historic Italianate home on its left with the modern home on its right (1136 Fort View, also designed by John Senhauser Architects).
- [Seven at Broadway Apartments](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/seven-at-broadway-apartments-pj-vj~7109949)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: An existing eight-story parking garage became the site for a seven floor, LEED certified apartment addition. The 111-unit design responds to the constraints of the structure, vertical transportation, and egress of the garage. The vertical massing of the bay living spaces produces a crenellated facade yielding a domestic articulation. The pattern repeats itself across the noth and east façades until they culminate at the building’s northeast corner with a series of overlapping units and balconies…
- [Eighth and Sycamore Apartments](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/eighth-and-sycamore-apartments-pj-vj~7109935)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: Eighth & Sycamore is a mixed-use, high-rise located at the intersection of Eighth and Sycamore Streets in downtown Cincinnati, Ohio. The 17-story, 388,075 SF building includes 133 rental units, amenity spaces, three retail spaces at street level, and a 500-space garage. The project’s color, rhythm, and orderly structure blend with the historic context of late 19th-century brick buildings. To enliven the tower's surface, the metal panels are coated with Kolorshift, an iridescent color-changing co…
- [Duveneck Square Apartments](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/duveneck-square-apartments-pj-vj~7109911)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 19
  - Description: Duveneck Square is a mixed-use urban infill project in Covington, Kentucky. Situated along Washington Street between 7th and 8th Street, the new development complements and enhances the existing historic neighborhood fabric, re-establishing density and creating a new, contemporary residential block. The building massing and materials draw inspiration from the mix of residential, retail, and industrial uses in the neighborhood. The project consists of two wood-framed buildings that contain a tota…
- [Eighth and Main Apartments](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/eighth-and-main-apartments-pj-vj~7109896)
  - Location: Not specified
  - Photos: 15
  - Description: Eighth & Main (now named The Blonde) is a 13-story high-rise apartment building in the heart of Cincinnati’s Main Street historic district and adjacent to a streetcar stop. Owing to the rather uncharacteristically wide site for the historic district, the design of both form and articulation was required to respond to an extensive series of guidelines and approvals stressing verticality, scale, rhythm, balance, and proportion. The project proforma required 125 apartment units ranging from micro u…
- [East Walnut Hills Renovation](https://www.houzz.com/hznb/projects/east-walnut-hills-renovation-pj-vj~2335599)
  - Location: Cincinnati, OH
  - Photos: 8
  - Description: This project began as a kitchen renovation and grew quickly to include an addition and new elevated terrace. The existing brick house had several haphazard porches and enclosures on the rear of the house, blocking views of the hills and complicating internal circulation. By removing the existing wood deck and opening up the rear brick wall, we were able to extend the kitchen and create a new breakfast area surrounded by glass. This spatial extension also allowed us to connect to the existing fam…
