## Community Q&A

**Q: please share wall and trim colors.** *(in Photo Questions)*

Beautiful room.  I am remodeling and the colors would be perfect in my son’s room.

A: Visited your link.  That looks great Mark!  Don't you just love the contrast?  And I'd love to know your source for those wonderful navy chairs.  Those are Eero Saarinen Chairs and I just ordered those for my own house!  They are so very comfortable - the angled seat bottom makes them ergonomically correct.  Where did you find them?

**Q: Should bathroom trim piece be flush with edge of the countertop?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Recently had new countertops installed in 2 bathrooms.  Everything seemed fine after install, but then after removing the mirrors to have them framed, I noticed the backsplash was 6/16" from the wall.  The 4" backsplash previously went up to the mirror and the mirror only left a 1" space on the sides before the adjacent wall.  The thickness of the caulk in the corner didn't immediately catch my attention because of the small distance between side wall and the mirror.  

I discussed this with the company that did the countertop install and their plan is to correct this by moving the backsplash and the existing side trim back to the wall (at some expense to me, though they were informed about our plans to remove the mirrors).  
This will move the 6/16" gap so the side trim will not be flush with the front edge of the countertop.  Is this acceptable?  

Photo shows gap at backsplash and wall and small amount of wall that was showing before mirror was removed, hence why i didn't notice this right away.  Time frame from install to mirror being removed. ~3wks. 
any advice??

A: Hello - sorry this happened to you.  The problem is that no wall is plumb - there are waves.  So moving the backsplash once it's been set (yikes!) will not solve this.  Not sure if I understand from the photo but could you select a trim piece or shluter edge that snugs up the countertop?  A good contractor can make that happen.  Also, if your new framed mirrors were designed to rest just on top of the back splash, you might not notice the gap if it rests on top.  Nice countertop material.  Good luck!

**Q: tv placement - centered on wall or across from the bed?** *(in Furniture)*

We are buying new bedroom furniture and will be changing the layout of our bedroom.  attached is a rough 2d design of the room.  it's a pretty small room 10.1 x 14.3.  

would you center the mounted on the wall or center it across from the bed???

any other suggestions for the room?  because it's so small we are only including bed, nightstands, and a sweater chest.  there won't be anything underneath the TV.

A: This is easy - where will you be viewing TV from most of the time?  If you are adding more seating (you have only one chair) then you may need to consider another position but if viewing from your bed - yes, straight in front of it, centered.  Be sure however, that you frame in the TV on that wall in some creative way.  As a designer, I always make sure you do not see the TV setting against a bare wall.  No matter how you hide the cords, they are viewable and unsightly when you enter the room (as drawn on your floor plan).   Good luck!

**Q: Pivot door or sliding door for shower** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I  have a 30"x59" frameless shower  (tub converted into a shower).  There is a toilet next to the shower on the valve side. There is a door next to the other end of the shower.  Will a glass pivot door which opens inward work in this space if the pivot door is attached to the wall across from the shower valve?

A: Thank you for the photo - wow that's a tight space.  I'm not sure a pivot door wouldn't just be in the way.  My practical designer-side is showing.  Open up the space and put in a solid glass panel - floor to ceiling.  A pony wall will only close it in.  If you can, just use the single panel there if it is not your main bath - no pivot door or slider.  I would definitely consider removing the door way between the two areas.  Too small to warrant that and it would open it up considerably.  Not sure where your lighting is placed but consider using a small LED flood in the bath when you do the full glass panel.  The visual effect from the entry will be stunning. Good luck.

**Q: convert 1980s bar sink to an office small** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Any advice for this space? I would like to convert to office space.

A: I assume you are eliminating the current bar area? If so, I'd place a floating desk top on the long wall (right) and integrate shelves (floor to ceiling) on the wall at the end. You can make the the desk top perpendicular to one of the lower wall shelves that will give you added desktop in a small space. This is a little more custom looking and "unexpected". You'll love it. **Q: bathroom niche and accent trim piece** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hi all,
I'm looking for ideas for a trim piece for my bathroom niche and also accent stripe.  I haven't found anything that isn't overly bulky looking.   You can't really see from the first photo but there is about a 1/2 cm gap- the carrera protrudes a bit further out than the glass.  Any suggestions?
