> Our old gas fireplace was not working anymore. Went to Maxwell Fireplace and Meredith, VP, assisted us in getting a new gas fireplace even though there were a few size restrictions Very pleased with installation being done by Robin and Dylan. They were not only professional but also friendly and explained what they were doing as they were installing & changing the chimney parts.

> Fireplace by Maxwell has an exemplary reputation as a provider of excellent work which much instill a sense of pride among their employees. The team at Maxwell fireplace worked in a tight deadline to ensure that I had a working gas fireplace for the Christmas holidays. Our home was the centre of activities with friends and relatives gathering from around the world and the beautiful fireplace was right in the middle of it all. My fireplace surround needed repair and the team they recommended were professional and personal. Well done to Maxwell Fireplace and their team! I will happily recommend this company.

**★★★★★ — Peter Lisicin, Nov. 2016**

> This summer we did a reno in our condo and wanted to replace the existing gas fireplace with a new, modern design. We were having difficulty choosing a fireplace vendor in the Vancouver area until we found Fireplace by Maxwell.
> Immediately, we saw the professional approach of this company. They quickly came to our site to provide a quote and approximate timing (short) for installation. When we realized that what we wanted would require customization the Fireplace by Maxwell team were on board. They helped us with design and indicated what was and was not possible. Our design required some custom trim which was produced for us.
> The Fireplace by Maxwell installation crew was courteous and knowledgeable and completed the work in just a few hours on the day originally agreed. The price did not vary from their quote. Unfortunately, the piece of custom trim got a bit banged up during our construction so Fireplace by Maxwell offered to refinish it for us at no cost. This was greatly appreciated.
> We definitely recommend Fireplace by Maxwell to anyone needing a new gas fireplace and looking for a well-qualified, professional team to provide it.

**Comment from Fireplace by Maxwell:**

> Fireplace by Maxwell is always a pleasure to do business with! They are very helpful, knowledgeable, and offer tons of options. Their patience is greatly appreciated when user error problems arise from our clients - and they are quick to service and do another quick tutorial.

**Comment from Fireplace by Maxwell:**

> Thank you LOTOS Construction for your review! It is always a pleasure to work with you as well. Our clients usually only have to deal with choosing and learning how to use a fireplace once or twice in their lifetime. We love to help assess how a client is going to use their fireplace space ... and to get the right thing installed. With a bit of help at the start, our clients are able to use their fireplace and be in control of their fabulous flames for many years to come.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Fireplace design** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I would like to add a hearth and possibly ship lap. the Saltillo tile will be getting removed and the other tile can be covered up I would like to add some character to this fireplace.

A: Hi Laura,
Can you dig up the manual for your fireplace or find it on line via the manufacturer's site? You will need to see what they allow around the fireplace area wall with regards to any wood or combustible products.
You are right in thinking to replace the hearth tile with another tile product as you will need to use non combustible surfaces for that area. A fireplace
needs to have a non-combustible hearth especially if it is sitting
directly on it like the one in your photo.
If you want to bring the shiplap look right up to the fireplace opening then your best bet is to find non-combustible version of shiplap, perhaps in a
porcelain, formed concrete or stone composite material.
If the fireplace is older, you can look at replacing it with a product that uses heat management or Heat Shift to give you a cool wall that will allow for combustible finishes to come up right around the fireplace trim.
Here is a photo from Valor Fireplaces using their Heatshift system with a Linear L3, no mantel and a TV right above the fireplace.
Just remember that concrete board and other noncombustible building materials will be required underneath the finishes. Lots of information on line for your contractor to follow once you select a fireplace.
Hope this helps and good luck! Martes at Maxwell.

**Q: Fireplace gas insert sizing help!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

In our new addition, a 36" W gas fireplace was mistakenly installed, instead of the 40" W that we ordered. We didn't realize it until after the stone went up. We don't want the mantle or tv any higher so the height must remain as is, so we have two options: keep the 36" W with 27,000 BTUs or replace it with a 42" W with only 22,000 BTUs (less heat). Does anyone have experience with Napoleon fireplaces? Will the 36" look too dinky in our great room (24' W x 16D x 13H)? If we switch it out to a 42", will we sacrifice the larger flame & more heat that the 36" offers?

A: Hello Chikmw. Each fireplace model has a clearance to combustibles guide, or in your case a mantel clearance. First thing to do is to check the specifications on each fireplace and compare them. I can't seem to see what material your mantel is made from, but if it is wood, clearances for mantel height is your first stop. Cheers, Martes at Maxwell.

**Q: redoing a fireplace wall in a small living room** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are replacing an old fireplace with a new gas fireplace and going to redo the entire wall with a new surround. Living room is small. We are wanting to use stone around and above fireplace plus wall mount the TV above the fireplace. thinking about using a natural, wood, contemporary mantle. Any ideas?

A: Hi Candace, Your first stop is going to be to check the factory specifications for the fireplace that you are buying. Find out what they say your mantel clearance is... or it could also be called clearance to combustibles. There is usually a formula that relates how far out the mantel is to how far above the fireplace a combustible i.e. wood mantel can go. Then you can estimate how low your TV can be positioned.
Use some painters tape to map this out on your wall, then get a chair in place it where you think your sofa will be. Are you going to be comfortable viewing the TV at this height?
If it is too high then you may have two options. 1. Change out your wood mantel idea for a contemporary non combustible stone or concrete material. This product will help deflect the air heat generated by the gas appliance and allow you to drop down the mantel height. 2. If this is a zero clearance fireplace, try using one that has a Heat Shift or heat management product like the Valor H5 or Valor linear series. This system keeps the wall above the fireplace cool and allows you to place your combustible products and TVs much lower on your wall. It's a great solution that can allow you to create beautiful designs with non combustible finishes around your fireplace. Best thing is that with a bit of planning it won't break your budget.
Good luck! Martes at Maxwells.

**Q: do you have see thru or double sided fireplaces** *(in Photo Questions)*

looking for a see thru or as some call it: a double sided fireplace for the outdoors?

A: Hi, thanks for your question. Yes we do have see through outdoor, indoor/outdoor, as well as a variety of see through indoor fireplaces. Come on down to our showroom at 1380 Pemberton Avenue we can discuss your project.
