A yard full of unruly overgrown everything, with established stuff that was never put there by me. So how do I tackle this incredible task? what approach would make the most sense? My DH says tear it all out and start over, that seems overkill to me and something I probably could never do (both literally and figuratively). and very possibly would need a back hoe to even truly do it that way....I have hired guys to work on our yard before, $300 later, basically they have done a glorified weed wacking job..and the plants that were out of control are at bay for a time...I need a more permanent solution so any suggestions would be more than appreciated. A: And the things you like but are just too big, cut it back or head it back from the inside out **Q: New Home and having a little writers block with landscaping** *(in Design Dilemma)* Hello, Im completely new to the forum, I was wondering if someone can give me some pointers on the house front lawn. I love the house but to be truthful I don't know where to begin on the landscaping. Any help would be appreciated! Currently the Grass is healthy, I do see some weeds but nothing major, I want to add color. Since I live in florida maintenance has to be easy (its hot outside). Above all I want my lawn and garden to have a manicure look without the painful hours of labor. Where do I begin? A: Replacng the hedge in front of the house with another type of plant would be fine but removing all together, as some suggest would be a mistake. You need something to anchor the house. I would possible replace or if I was on a budget, head them back to the size was more appropriate. I would then remove all the grass between the hedge and walk and replace with lower shrubs, perennials and groundcover that flower. On the right side of the door, I would extend the bed out away from the house and take a similar approach to create some plant layers. Good luck! **Q: Fire pit or outdoor kitchen** *(in Polls)* It's the perfect time to enjoy outdoor cookouts with your friends and family. Would you prefer to grill over an open flame fire pit or prepare a meal using a fully equipped outdoor kitchen? A: Both. I'd take the outdoor kitchen with a $150 portable firepit. I find that clients don't ever use their firepits as much as they had thought they would so why dedicate a space for it. I try to discourage all my clients from permanent firepits. Instead, i try to persuade them into building a multi use patio and take the money they would spend on the firepit and buy a high end portable unit that they can move out of the way if they aren't using it. **Q: Help with curb appeal** *(in Design Dilemma)* Just bought new home a few months ago. I dug out some old shrubs in the front, and looking for some more advice on ways to improve my home. A: I agree with one of the first posts. I like the idea of lowering the portico (i wouldn't remove it completely) so it's not part of the roof. I also like the idea of painting the door and replacing the columns with something more substantial although they still should be simple. Then plants of course. A small tree at the corner that is just out of view along with a mixture of evergreen and deciduous shrubs and perennials along the front of the house. I don't have a problem with the functionality of the walk. If visitors are parking in the driveway, the walkway should remain where it is. If most visitors park in the street, run the walkway in both directions with a generous entrance at the street. **Q: Curb appeal need lots of help** *(in Design Dilemma)* In April 2014 my husband and I bought our first home. We did a few minor updates after purchasing it (new shrubs/bushes, freshly painted shutters) but I still feel like it's plain and missing something. We live in a neighborhood where all the other houses are similar in size and structure to ours, but I really want my house to stand out, just confused as to which direction to go in. Maybe some black or white rockers on front porch, or wicker chairs? Any advice is appreciated! A: Your house is nice. As others have suggested, the lack of curb appeal is due to the gardens. There isn't much going on in them currently to create any interest. I would suggest extending a garden bed to the other side of the front walk and extending the bed depth from the end of the walkway to beyond the end of the house. Then you can tie the bed back into the side of the house or create a new bed along that side too. Whether you build a stone retaining wall that matches your facade or not, plant layering with create interest. With deeper beds, add some perennials in front of the shrubs and some height at the corner of the house (4-5' tall) to anchor the structure. The bed on the other side of the walkway should have something planted in it that provides some secondary height surrounded by lower plants around that. If a stone retaining wall is built, extending garden beds around the base would look nice too. **Q: Love these foundation plantings?
