We are currently interested in the concept of net zero energy homes. Our goal is to create lasting and beautiful work, maintain friendly and positive long term relationships with our clients, while making the design and construction process as smooth and enjoyable as possible. Additionally, we do construction work for other designers. We consistently work with other local architects who have the highest standards in their work, and have successfully completed several projects on some of these architects’ own homes. Ian MacLeod received a Master of Architecture from U.C. Berkeley in 1993. He received several awards and prizes including an AIA scholarship, the Bakewell & Brown prize (for hand drawings of architectural detail), and the John K. Branner Traveling Fellowship for 9 months of independent travel and study. During the entire 1.5 year project, I appreciated Ian's frequent and detailed communication, thoughtful attention to detail, care of my home and job site, and provision of options and cautions. Ian tackled a number of unusual challenges, including a beautiful but challenging design from my wonderful architects, as well as working with the California Straw Building Association to build a volunteer workshop-led straw bale wall. He anticipated problems before they occurred and helped me head them off. He was incredibly attentive to costs and my project came in at budget; the project barely touched my planned-for overages. There was only one or two minor cost increases from unanticipated issues due to the original structure. Ian does beautiful work and has a great eye; he takes much pride in the quality of his work and has higher standards than I do. Moreover, he ensured that the house and job site were well cared for, secured, and impeccable. He, and his team, literally gave blood and sweat for this project.
