"When the room is off, you're off. I'm not just working with design, I'm shifting the energy to change the way you feel." Gina Paris, Interior Designer, Construction Project Manager

Paris is a self-taught designer whose firm specializes in redesign, renovation, and the creation of upcycled furniture and home accessories.

As a teenager, she worked in her parents’ auto parts store, experimenting with paint and also helped her mother do everything from shingle roofs, to wallpapering and painting her own bedroom. But it wasn’t until she remodeled her 100-year-old home in Conneaut Lake that she knew design was “in me”.

Her functional and comfortable spaces combine the full spectrum of color, a mix of furniture styles and materials and the use of light in ways that change the energy of a room. For Paris, design is about reconnecting with and healing the mind, body and spirit.

> What a pleasure it was having Gina Paris come to our home. She is so easy to work with. The color palette Gina helped me with for our large family room was perfect. It's colors brought warmth and a relaxed mood-- we are so much enjoying our room. And, now the compliments have been overwhelming. I especially love how she pulled the palette of colors together with what we already have in furnishings and etc.. Gina Paris is highly recommended!

> Gina Paris has updated our whole house. She has redesigned our living room using existing furniture and accessories in more creative and artistic ways. Before the room was not welcoming to visit; now its inviting, warm and comforting. I saw no hope for our bedroom. Gina got some great new pieces, new window treatments, painted my grandmother’s dresser; and now everything is in perspective, light and air. Beautiful!
> She has been instrumental in finding exactly the right granite counter top and glass and stone backsplash for our kitchen. For our great room Gina has designed a very creative window enclosure which conceals a prominent Jacuzzi. We resurfaced the fireplace with sucked cultured stone, added custom built-ins, new furnishings, lighting, and accessories…this room is spectacular.

> Usually, I make the wrong decision on paint and end up hating the end result. Hoping to avoid this, I consulted with Gina Paris on colors for my master bedroom. Gina is very knowledgable about color schemes and was able to provide me with a palette of colors— that coordinated with my existing bedding—which I could view prior to purchasing paint. We decided together that we’d go with a traditional look fro the room, since my home is over 100 years old and retains a lot of the natural wood trim. Gina was able to match my existing design perfectly, as well as, the woodwork in the room. Even the ceiling color was provided white with a hint of rose— a nice change from plain ceiling white. I was very happy with the results. The bedroom looks and feels very traditional and the woodwork is warmly complemented; the exact look I was going for. I would highly recommend Gina.

> Gina paris is awesome! Gina is very affordable and great at what she does! We had a house on the market for over 2 years. Gina came in and gave suggestions on what we needed to be done and the house sold in just a few months! She is a professional and very organized. She is a "hands on" worker, persistent in what she wants, but not pushy; and beautiful on the outside as well as the inside. We so appreciate her services.

> I first met Gina when she came to my previous home to "stage" it for sale. she took my old stuff and rearranged it so it flowed, made sense, and was pleasing to the eye of most buyers. My home sold in the next 60 days, after being on the market the previous 18 months. When I purchased my new home, Gina helped me define the style and color palette for my new space. Now when I walk into the space, it really feels like home, so beautiful to the eye, and so satisfying for the spirit and soul.

> Gina did the draperies in our gathering room and master bath for us. She did a wonderful job, from the beginning consultation 'til the final installation. She did the design and gave us wonderful fabric and trim choices. She then came down to SC with everything she needed in hand to install. It was surely an added bonus to work with such a beautiful, talented and pleasant young lady. She will definitely be the one we call when we are ready to do more decorating. Sandy Hunter

> Gina Worked with me to determine the theme and feel for my new home. She helped me choose a color scheme totally individualized to my taste and that fit the mood and lifstyle I was seeking. Gina then designed, shopped and arranged my entire home. She worked with and coordinated subcontractors for paint, floor covering and bath remodel. We worked together to keep desirable design elements of the original home, upcycle those that needed it and replaced what remained.
> I wake up happy to start my day, and end it relaxing in the woderful space around me.
> Thanks Gina!

But more importantly, she asked me to choose five words that defined the mood or feel of the space. Then, throughout the design process, if we were stuck on a decision, we simply always went back to the words I had selected. This process served as a beacon by which our collaborative design evolved. - Description: In this kitchen remodel, the cooktop was moved from the left side of the kitchen to the opposite side where you see it now. The window was replaced with a larger window that rests on the countertop. All of the rough cut wood was removed and dental molding trim was added to mimic taller cabinetry. This minor renovation was made to accommodate a wheel chair- the island was reduced in size creating additional seating and left over cabinets. These cabinets were used to finish the cooktop area. The mirrors were raised up about 5" and double brass wall sconces were mounted right onto the mirror for a cleaner, modern look. Bottom up/Top down shades replaced the dark faux wood blinds to allow light in while maintaining privacy. White porcelain hardware was replaced with brass branch pulls.

 - Description: This gorgeous custom glass back-splash was designed for a lake home. The iridescent Cane, Harvest, and Incense colors, for the random modular tile pattern, were inspired by the cabinetry and granite countertop. Inspiration for the listello tiles came from the lake- can you see the wave pattern in the glass? These shimmery and stunning glass tiles were custom created in Italy and transported to Conneaut Lake for installation of a one-of-a-kind kitchen back-splash. Photo by Heather Reichel

 - Description: This home office makeover was designed for a client who works at home a few days of the week. It wasn't until after I finished redesigning her family room that she realized her office didn't have the same feeling that her family room had, and she couldn't stand to look into (or work in) the chaotic office any longer. This room got a complete makeover with new carpeting, built in desk with wood file cabinet drawers, black wall cabinet, beautiful black knife pleated Roman shades, light fixtures, a…

## Community Q&A

**Q: How did you hang the canvas behind the bed?** *(in Photo Questions)*

A: Hi Caroline. I used loose wire attached to the frame, and a large picture hanger installed close to the corner, to change the canvas behind the bed. It took a couple of tries to get the wire the correct length.

**Q: Subway Tile advice** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I can't decide whether to get shiny or matte finish for white subway tile for my kitchen and also would like opinions on 2 x 8 or 3 x 6 subway tiles. I think I would prefer 2 x 8's but maybe there is some reason the 3 x 6's seem to be the most popular.
Here is a picture of my kitchen. The countertops are granite with a suede finish and the cabinets are Alabaster White which is, I think, a Sherwin Williams color. So the finishes of counter tops and cabinets is matte.
The wall paint is Dover Gray which is darker than it looks in this picturer. The subway tile will go in all the usual places that subway tile would go and I would like to know how high up I should go. I've been advised to go a little beyond the bottom of the cabinets. Also, I think I'd like to do something different with the back splash for the "hutch" area but have been advised that I should keep it the same. I wanted to do some mirror tiles and make that area stand out as the congregating area that I want it to be. Here's a picture of that area:

Thanks for any help you can give.

A: Unless you're staging your home to sell, go with what makes YOU happy. ;-)
P.S. Gray is a neutral color... it will last.

**Q: Where to end backsplash tile** *(in Design Dilemma)*

We are tiling our backsplash and need to know where to end the tile. In line with the upper cabinet edge, in line with the granite edge, or at the end of the wall. Also, we are using a neutral modern 2x6 subway tile with a basket weave focal point over the cooktop. What type of edging should we use. Bullnose or metal edging. The only bullnose we can get is 3x12.

A: I recommend the tile ends at the granite edge and is finished with the metal edge (the metal edge is more contemporary and is in keeping with your range hood and hardware style).

**Q: Help with fireplace and mantel** *(in Design Dilemma)*

This fireplace feels oversized for the room and I think the proportions are a bit off. Any suggestions on how to decorate this area? Can't replace anything structurally, just looking for suggestions on how to work with it..

A: Do you like the reflections in all of those mirror shots? Even if you have a beautiful chandelier, as in the first photo, the emptiness of a mirror will not balance out the bottom heavy brick. Use art and accessories with colors that naturally bring your eye all the way up.

**Q: Trying again...I want these window treatments. Where can I get them?** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Please someone help me find these treatments!!!

A: They look custom made. Have you tried finding someone that designs and sells custom window treatments in your area?

**Q: Valance** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I would like to keep my bedroom valances but would like to add silk panels to them. On the two side windows I would add one panel each and then drape it to the right and left. The real dilemma is what do I do with the middle windows?

Also, I was thinking of getting wood shades to match the mahogany furniture in the bedroom. The room is quite large and has wood floors. Do you think it would make the room to dark?

Any suggestions are welcomed!

A: Looks great Doreen!
