A friendly, knowledgeable professional who not only mirrored my own sense of perfectionism, but did so with a creativity that brought to life my vision for my new home. > I called Marie for help with the windows in my sun room. Marie asked about my expectations and arrived with books of beautiful fabrics. She spent time going through them with me and guiding me towards what turned out to be far above what I had hoped for. I was so impressed that I asked her to put together throw pillows for the chairs. I left the choices entirely up to her. My confidence in her was well founded. The sun room has been totally transformed. My enthusiasm was bolstered and I asked her to work on my dining room with me. Again, she showed up with great choices and the finished product was beautiful. I hosted a dozen people for Christmas dinner and they were all awed by my gorgeous dining room. I look forward to being able to work with Marie again. I can't say enough good things about her.

**★★★★★ — Cathy McDonagh, Dec. 2015**

> During the spring of 2015 my wife and I renovated our bedroom. We had fresh paint, new floors and a new color scheme. The window treatments were the only thing remaining. I was frozen…I lacked skill and confidence to make a good choice. Touring the rest of my house was evidence of prior bad choices. Simple curtains and or box store shades. The shades from the “box stores” showed significant wear and tear after only three years and were poorly installed (by me) so they never really looked great.
> Here was my unprofessional solution to give us privacy at night. That’s right, my temporary solution was fitted bed sheets.
> I knew I wanted the best – Hunter Douglas window treatments and I knew I needed a professional.
> I contacted Marie after looking at some photos on her facebook page. She came and took a look at the project. She took in all the details of the room and asked lots of questions. We looked at samples from Hunter Douglas and made some decisions. Within a week Marie delivered sample materials and started creating the vision for the finished product.
> After I made my choice on fabric Marie was able to send me some computer generated images of what the finish product would look like. Marie took lots of time and worked with me around keeping the project on budget and she was very accommodating in order to complete the project as quickly as possible.
> I could not be happier with the finished product. We love our new room! Having the windows professionally done makes all the other details of the room worth the time and effort. The installers were skilled and really knew the product. The Silhouette shades work perfectly every time and soften incoming sunlight and provide privacy as needed. Marie’s valences were expertly made. Care and effort when into each cut and stitch. The placement of the window treatments filled some of the dead space between the top of the window and the ceiling.
> Our room is now perfect for us. Marie was able to bring it all together for us. I highly recommend Marie. Her ideas, precision and expertise are second to none.

> I hired Marie to do window treatments for my entire 3 bedroom condo. She was great. She had wonderful ideas and suggestions for colors and types of window treatments, from wood blinds to duette honeycomb shades. She immediately got an idea of what I like and geared her suggestions towards my tastes. I placed the order and it was done on time with no problems. The installation was also very professionally done. I would definitely recommend her.

> From the moment Marie walked into my home, I felt that she was genuinely interested in getting to know me and what I wanted from her services. She designed and installed custom window treatments and window blinds for my family room and kitchen. She listened closely to how I described what I was seeking, how we lived and astutely observed my style.
>
> When she brought swatch books to select fabric, she brought ones that contained exactly color and style selections that were appropriate for me, indicating to me how closely she paid attention.
>
> She was also sensitive to my budget and style preferences. At no time did I feel pressured to do more than I wanted. She also made excellent suggestions along the way. I will definitely be hiring her again as I continue to update my decorating.

## Community Q&A

**Q: Storing Luminette Sheers** *(in Windows)*

First of all, I have a cat that loves to chew things (cords, especially). I didn't realize when I had Luminette sheers installed on my patio door, that my cat would chew on the backs of the blinds. When she chews, she drools, and I had brown stains on the back of the blinds. I finally got the stains mostly removed.

I can only have my curtains partially closed, and I put a 42" long PetSafe ScatMat strip in front of the curtains and double-sided sticky tape on the wood trim. When I close the curtains completely (which I want to do when it gets dark outside), my cat will get in back of the curtains (the area that doesn't have the ScatMat strip) and chew on the curtains, I don't want to put ScatMats all the way in front of the patio window (which is about 96" wide), because my cat likes to look outside.

I'm very frustrated, because I just bought the Luminette sheers this year, and I paid quite a lot for them. Now I'm wishing I had kept my rod and drapes that I had removed for the Luminette Sheers. Do you know if it's difficult to take the curtains down, and how would I store them? They are about 84" long. I'm thinking at least for the winter months when I want drapes closed, I'd put up the old rod and drapes.

Do you have any suggestions for me? This was a very expensive mistake.

A: Yes, Shout would work. I prefer natural stain removers. Try Seventh Generation or Method if you can find them.

**Q: Bamboo shades or white 2" blinds** *(in Design Dilemma)*

Hello all, should I go with bamboo shades or white blinds? Also, trying to decide on color of nightstands - white or wood. Thank you for your suggestions.

A: If you want the room to be darkened for sleeping, I recommend bamboo or woven wood shades with a blackout liner. Blinds will not block out the light, there will be lots of light gaps.
If blackout isn't a priority, I recommend child-safe cordless 2" blinds. They should have the tilt controls to the outside of the window, i.e. one left control and one right control. Be careful how the treatment operates. You don't want to have to climb onto the bed to adjust the window treatment.
The room appears to not have any defined wood or white finishes. You could use either for the nightstands.

**Q: Need help with bedroom window treatments, please!** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi all. I'm new here, and I'm looking for input on some home decorating. I'm attaching pics. I would like to put up drapery panels in my guest bedroom, but I'm not sure what to do, if anything. I'm planning on a burlap or linen bedskirt and shams for the bed, and I wanted to have drapery panels of the same. However, in front of one of the windows is a radiator with a large, immovable cover that sort of looks like a window seat. The only option there would be either just a valance (I'm not crazy about that option) or short panels that go to the top of the radiator cover. That means I'd have to have short panels on the other window to match. Do you think I'm better off doing without panels altogether? Thanks!

A: I don't care for sill length panels. The room could use the softness of fabric. Definitely go to the floor with the panels. On the window with the radiator, tie the panels back low and pull the bottom portion of the drapes beyond the radiator. Of course, you could tie both windows back for a consistent look. If you put the panels on a wrought iron rod, you could get wrought iron holdbacks to pull the drapes back. An additional advantage of having the drapes to the floor is the more fabric, the better sound absorption. It would look extra cozy for guests too!

**Q: Color to warm up taupe couch** *(in Home Decorating)*

Hi, I need help choosing accent colors to "warm up" my family room.

I would like to incorporate color in the form of curtains, accent pillows, & throw blankets, but I need help choosing which colors.

My AREA RUG Is Jute. My SECTIONAL Is Taupe (It's "chunky otter" by klaussner to be specific.) The PAINT COLOR is "Revere Pewter" is the paint color.

what color do you think I should use? Any and all advice is welcome and appreciate :)

A: Beautiful family room, kwest. You have made some great decor decisions so far. selecting a neutral sofa, rug and walls give you a great base to accessorize. To warm up the room, I suggest adding in burgundy, orange and deep chocolate brown. I love the others suggestion to add a small overlay area rug. If that's to your liking, get that first. Then you can pull out the colors for the pillows and throws. The windows call for a patterned fabric. Perhaps a somewhat neutral color scheme to work with the walls and floor. That way you can change out the pillows and throws as the seasons change. Window treatments are more of a staple than an accent. Happy decorating!

**Q: Window covering help!** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I need some ideas on what to do for a window treatment above my kitchen sink. The blind in place is fine, it’s a grey/brown color, but what do you suggest for the white bar and would be modern for this space? Thank you!

A: That's great you have a nice neutral shade to start with. Remove the white "bar". It is a dated continental curtain rod, popular in the 90's early 2000's. A flat board mounted valance that goes up to the ceiling would be great. A patterned fabric in your style/color scheme would be nice. Moving it up to the ceiling will give you height and get rid of that awkward space between the top of the molding and the ceiling. If you can, please post a photo of the window straight on and I'll draw it out for you. What other colors are in the room? Are there any other windows?

**Q: Family room drapery dilemma** *(in Design Dilemma)*

I am trying to decide on s drapery fabric for my family for quite a while, but have a hard time...The family room is open to a kitchen which is white and grey with dark expresso island. The family room walls are the same light grey with a darker shade grey sectional sofa. No rugs or armchairs, so for now it looks pretty sterile. Should I go with a bold patterned or floral drapes to add some interest and color or should I choose the solid fabric and add a border, for example? Please help?

A: Hi Victoria, Custom draperies can be an investment so they should be able to stand the test of time. I suggest a solid drapery with an accent banding. Maybe a creamy white linen fabric with a geometric or animal print banding. The Maxwell print is quite beautiful but it will make a bold statement that you will be tied to. Be well, live beautifully.
