Using the chairs in the photo (or any mismatched chairs), I'd move one of the chairs (the one that fits best) to the right arm of the sofa creating an "L" shape with the two pieces. Put an end table between them with a table lamp to fill the gap. Leave the other chair angled as pictured to the left of the fireplace to complete the group. Yes, you'll block off one entrance to the seating group which is fine. Put a small side table by the fireplace chair as well. The space will feel more cozy and less formal. Good luck! **Q: Stairwell update..Natural oak just too dated now!** *(in Design Dilemma)* We are renovating the upstairs and putting up hardwood flooring on the upper hallway and bedrooms. We would really like the entranceway to have a more modern feeling to it. The terracotta floors on the main floor are staying so whatever is done to the railing will have to match with the feel of the main floor. We will have to match the colouring upstairs to the railing. We did not want to paint the staircase or spindles white as had been suggested by some people since there is nothing really white about the house. I would like to preserve the beauty of the oak, but is there any way this can be done without painting everything?We even thought of a glass railing but since it is a rounded staircase, it would be too expensive. We are leaning to a dark stain on the staircase so we can do dark hardwood flooring upstairs, but we don't want the main entrance to feel to dark. I would appreciate some input on colouring, stain, or any other options? If we did paint some part of the staircase, which part and what colour? two toned? A: White railing, risers etc... will tie in with the existing baseboards and door trim and give you more flexibility with the upstairs hardwood. Given that the terra cotta tile is staying, it would probably be better to avoid ultra dark stain on the staircase and/or upstairs flooring. You might consider a medium dark stain with subtle red undertones to compliment the tile. Either way I would refinish all the existing golden oak for a more updated look. Whichever you pick will make your staircase even more spectacular! Good luck! **Q: What color of hardwood or tile in kitchen?** *(in Design Dilemma)* Should we tile the kitchen or do all hardwood. I cant decide what color of hardwood. The kitchen/ dining has a soffit dividing with trey cieling in dining. and the rest is open. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! A: The combination you have in the first photo is the better of the two. I agree with jhmarie that you will likely be happier with a mid tone wood floor since they are much more forgiving for dust/dirt than darker wood floors. The lighter countertop (and lighter paint) will help brighten up the space. Good luck! **Q: Empty space near fireplace** *(in Design Dilemma)* My living room has a fireplace and next to it there is an empty space to put cupboard in (I think) I am not sure what to put in there. Can someone please help!! A: Finishing the niche space with built-in shelving will give you a great secondary focal point and also help hide the cable box and power cords. The tv could stay where it is leaving the built-ins for books/accessories/components. But you might find lowering it in the built-ins will give a more comfortable viewing angle while seated with shelving above and closed storage below for the unsightly components.
