> Liz designed our dream house and for that, and so many more reasons, she is our hero. We live in Texas most of the year and three years ago had bought a beautiful property in Vermont with incredible views but a steep incline. We knew that to build the house we always desired and imagined -- and to do it from 2,000 miles away -- required a very special architect.
>
> Aesthetically, our search for Vermont-based architects who had a style that we admired didn't take long. Liz's work stood out immediately. Though her work is varied, she clearly has a highly refined and contemporary sensibility -- never a wasted note in her work. That being said, Liz is every bit as great as a partner and client manager as she is a designer. She was patient with us when it was required and nudged us towards or away from decisions when some resolution was needed. She helped us stretch on some design decisions and was also practical in areas where we needed to rein in costs or scope. She is curious and informed about both creative and engineering details.
>
> Given that nearly all communication with Liz was remote and virtual it is quite amazing that our home was built on time, on budget and looked and felt exactly like the drawings, documents and animations that Liz created. When we finally stepped into our home, our jaws dropped -- not just from the beauty of the home but also from how true it was to the simple, modern and open design that Liz drew to fit our hillside.
>
> I could go on and on but I'll say simply that our experience was a 10 out of 10 and that both Liz's service and her amazing eye for design and detail are extraordinary.

> Settling and building on 10 acres of hayfield is a massive endevour, I knew I needed help. I admired the homes that Liz designed in and around the area where we live. I called her up, invited her over and asked for her guidance on our project. I am grateful for all the hand holding, feedback, brainstorming, professionalism and resources she's connected me to for MORE help in the decision making process that never ends. I'm a newbie at construction. It's far more costly then I imagined and Liz has helped us with our vision. In our particular case, the planning, designing and settling will take us years. Liz has been and continues to be patient, attentive and nurturing as we form our daydreams into a reality.

> We needed to do some long-deferred maintenance on our lake cabin and decided to combine that with some changes that would it more livable into our old age. We chose Liz Herrmann as our architect after touring another home that she had designed and exploring her website (eharchitect.com) It was clear that she shared our aesthetic and the homeowners gave her a rave review. The experience has been everything we hoped for. We prepped for our first design meeting with a list of priorities for the renovation, starting with the kitchen. Right off the bat, she came up with a creative solution for our kitchen that had not occurred to us even after years of thinking about it. As busy professionals, we didn’t have time to make decisions about fixtures and materials, so we relied on Liz to filter the options. She was patient answering our questions, very thorough and detailed in her plans, and provided us with numerous schematics to help us envision the finished design. Since we were not local, we asked her to recommend a contractor and she worked seamlessly with them. As we needed to adjust the design to meet our budget, she was great about giving us the pros and cons of possible modifications.
>
> We’ve been through some disastrous remodeling projects in the past. In contrast, this was very stress-free. It was actually fun to see the design come to life!. As issues came up after we broke ground, we felt well-informed about the budgetary and timeline implications. Liz was responsive to the contractor to avoid delays. Needless to say, we are delighted with the outcome and are enjoying exploring our light, efficient, modern space.

**★★★★★ — Bruce Stevenson, June 2018**

> We are building a small (2,000 sf) home in Vermont. We started our process by interviewing 3 architects, and Liz won going away. We were impressed with her previous works, aesthetic sense, and clear-headed sensitivity to our budget. We’re now almost finished with the plans and love the design she’s come up with. Throughout, our appreciation for Liz has only grown – she’s been professional, timely, and great to work with. Probably most impressive is her unique ability to listen to our ideas and combine those with her own discriminating style. We can’t wait to see the finished product!

**★★★★★ — Steve and Nancy Edwards, March 2017**

> We purchased a piece of property that had a complex set of building restrictions -- wetland, setback on all sides, etc., all of which required extensive permitting. The architectural challenge was to create a beautiful "Vermont vernacular" home within difficult restrictions. What's more, we had special physical design requirements of our own. Liz met all these challenges and created an outstanding home, inside and out. She came highly recommended to us by pros in the building industry. Personally and professionally, Liz and her assistant architect, Paula, are very easy to work with, creative, responsible, responsive, willing and able to asses our wants/needs and guide us in the right direction. We're delighted with our new home and recommend Liz and Paula highly!

**★★★★★ — Chad Yonkman, Jan. 2017**

> Liz was pleasure to work with from our first meeting. She clearly understood, embraced, and enhanced our vision for our small, modern, cozy haven. Liz not only has the design chops to create beautiful buildings, but the practical focus and experience to make spaces that really work and feel right. Her extensive knowledge of materials and building techniques and systems, as well as her close working relationships with talented builders, were invaluable to the success of our project.

> I wish I could give Liz more than five stars. Simply put: she's amazing! I bought land with barn on it that we decided to turn into a home and I needed the right architect who could help me fit my wish list (open living area, two bedrooms, 1.5 baths, a studio/craft area) into a small(ish) space, maximizing the view of the mountains behind it. Liz designed a beautiful home that I marvel at every single day. It feels so big and spacious - much more than its 1250 sq. ft. - because her attention to detail, including room size, layout, windows, doors and lighting, was meticulous. Liz met me at the land and we spent hours talking about my hopes for the home in her studio. The first plan she drew up incorporated all the things I asked for and more precisely because Liz really listens (and she came in under budget!). The design process with her was so easy - she was always responsive via email and phone and visited the building site with me as the house was being constructed. She's delightful to work with and designs unique homes that fit the space and your specific needs. I can't speak highly enough about her. I'm living in my dream home and Liz helped make this happen.

> Elizabeth Herrmann is an amazing architect – she is clear, creative, efficient and wonderful to work with.
>
> We brought our needs and hopes to her and she has translated them into a beautiful, unique and practical addition to our home. The design Liz has created is true to its purpose and our aesthetic sense, at the same time that it is uniquely her own – clean lined, inventive, and quietly stunning.
>
> We have loved working with both Liz and her Project Manager, Paula Sherr. Throughout the planning process, each of these talented architects has given us as much time, information, and support as we have needed or wanted. It has been a truly collaborative and enjoyable process. And we think the resulting plan is perfect!

**★★★★★ — savd, Jan. 2015**

> Elizabeth Herrmann far surpassed our expectations and created us the house of our dreams! The house is perfect for us and fits us and our lifestyle in every way. There is nothing I would change about the design of our home. Liz was a pleasure to work with; professional, highly responsive, and very creative. She also worked very cooperatively with our contractor.

**★★★★★ — state14, Jan. 2015**

> Liz Herrmann is a conscientious and talented architect who blends a clean design aesthetic with functionality. After interviewing 3 firms in the Champlain Valley area, it was a no-brainer to hire Liz. We knew she would listen to what we wanted and respect our ideas while guiding us intelligently through the design process. She created a plan for the home we had dreamt about for 6 years and to this day, the details and refinement of the architecture make our house unique, spacious and timeless. We LOVE where we live and how we live and we have Liz to thank for that.

**★★★★★ — rochellezabarkes, Dec. 2013**

> Our friends hired Liz Herrmann to build their house in Leicester, Vermont. Their modern home on the lake is beautiful to look at and wonderful to live in (we've stayed there). Ms. Hermann worked with North Timber Associates. Our friends say that the experience of working with these professionals was just astonishing. Work was done as promised, on time and on budget.
>
> When my husband and I bought property nearby, although our friends suggested Ms. Herrmann, I was initially reluctant because the style of their house is so different from the house I wanted. We met with Liz and Alex Carver from North Timber, and were so taken with both of them, that we hired them to build our house.
>
> I made a wish list for my house, had initial ideas and drawings done by a friend and architect in New York, and then gave the preliminary drawings to Liz.
>
> We have just begun construction, and I know that our house is exactly what we want—a little quirky, in an eclectic style, and very different from the house Liz built for our friends. It is going to be beautiful, and on time and on budget. We have a remarkable team working for us. This is a great experience.

**★★★★★ — Eileen Brunetto, Nov. 2012**

> Elizabeth Herrmann's attention to the soul of her work and the spirit of the homeowner is a strength she possesses effortlessly. Add to that her eye for beautiful, efficient, unique detail and expert knowledge. Elizabeth is extremely pleasant to work with, as well.

## Community Q&A

**Q: What are the dimensions of the island?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Would be so helpful to know. The cooktop fits it well. Nice proportion.

A: Actually, the layout works really well. It is actually a little deeper than 3' since the pop-up downdraft fan takes up a bit more room. The owners have no trouble with the island size or splatter issues!

**Q: backsplash and countertop** *(in Photo Questions)*

I absolutely love this kitchen. Would you be willing to share the color/brand of the backsplash tile and (island) countertop?

A: The counter is Absolute Black Granite with a honed finish. The tile is a crackle glaze very light grey. Not sure it is made anymore but I'll bet Fireclay Tile has something really similar!

**Q: Countertop material and colour** *(in Photo Questions)*

LOVE this kitchen! Such a warm feel. Can you please tell me what material is used for the grey countertops as well as the specific colour? Thank you very much.

A: The gray counters are actually custom stainless steel. The steel really has a soft look when paired with warm materials and lots of natural light.

**Q: light fixtures** *(in Photo Questions)*

Hi,
Does anyone know whose light fixtures are in this bathroom?
Thanks

A: It is a Vogue series sconce by Modern Forms. They have a variety of finishes and configurations.

**Q: What color is the roof?** *(in Photo Questions)*

It appears tan, but it is difficult to tell. We are planning on staining our island cottage a darker brown and we are trying to decide on a color for our standing seam roof?

A: It is warm gray. It looks a bit lighter in this photo than it actually is.

**Q: baseboard and casing size?** *(in Photo Questions)*

Beautiful home. Do you know the size of the baseboard and casing? Thank you!

A: I believe we used 2" casing around the door (pretty slim) and 3" at the floor.
